CURE FOR CONSUMPTION-
Onk of the most interesting
themes ot the telegrapic (lispatchea
of late has been the discoveries of
Prof. Koch, of Germany, on the
matter of a cure tor the terrific
tn'fcrculosis. or consumption tiiut
hai always been the moat deadly
foe to mankind.
A number of years ago this in
defatigable laborer in the cause of
science, announced that he had
discovered the specific bacteiium
of tube rculocie, or, in other words,
that he had found the germ of the
disease or class of diseases which
are ordinarily called consumption.
Having found the cause of tubercu
lar disease, as he believed, I'io
fersor Koch went to w ork to find a
remedy for the scourge of civilized
liu nanity, and now. after a num
ber of years of experiment and
etudy, he states that he has sin
ce deJ, and that consumption may
b-: cured almost infallibly by his
m thod of treatment.
This treatment is understood tn
consist in inoculation with a lymph
prt pared by Koch himself, but
what its precise therapeutic action
is has not yet been explained. It
can hardly bear a close analogy to
vaccination, for Jenner's discov
ery has never been considered a
c ire for smallpox, but merely a
preventive against it.
The K'nperorofCit ruiany is cer
tainly a Convert to Koch's theory
of cuiing consumption, for he has
made a (er.-n.il gift of ."ii,000 to
th discoverer, and another of a
like am lunt to endow a national
institute for the production of the
lymph ined In the process.
The Chronicle very truthfully
remarks that it if not probable
that the medical world will uccept
Kch's discovery without uuerv
or challenge, and it is light that;
it ehould not. The history oi the !
healing art teems with supposed

precedent, it may have a serioun
efl'ect upon the attendance at Har

will not be likely to surrender their
traditional rights without at least
a Btruggle.
The demociata in Santa Fe tried
the neat but ancient trick of steal
ing the returns from the heaviest
republican precinct in the country.
Then the party managers joined in
the hue and cry oyer the outrage
but they tried to take advantage
of the steal when the vote was
canvassed. This game was nipped
in the bud by a republican ju 'g.
who ordered the returns to be
brought before him. As control
of the legislature turns upon the
result of that county the republi
cans have scored a good point.
IK of the candidates, who,
were not supposed to be in the
fight, but who were elected by j
large majorities, promise to make ;
as much fun as thesandlot brigade
did in our legislature eleven years '
ago. One judge near Kansas City j
doesn't know any law, but he pro- ,
poses to dispense that common- (
sense justice which is sometimes
better than law. Still, the lawyers
w iU be apt to tangle him up in
technicalities until the court won't
know itself.
A i'eci liar phase of the use
' powenul projectors in
raval warfare has been brought
out in some tests made by the
French naval authorities. It ap
pears that in misty w heather the
reflection and glare of the light
from the projectors served only to
blind the ship, and the torpedo
boats were able to approach within
easy distance and discharge their
torpedoes without leing dis
overed. Perhaps the unfavorably com
mented upon public ms'i in the
entire country just now is Cent us
- nperiutendent Porter. The pal-
p.ibly apparent remissness of the ;
enumeration gives ample grounds
for criticism, but w hen the lack of
numbers in our reputation is lull
at the door of the McKinlcy bill
as does the Alta, and Mr. Porter
is blamed for all of that the height
of supreme cruelty is reached.
Oil the wayes has passed out of
proverbs into practical use and
diip masters now ii'inilier in their
supplies a quantity of this calm
producing element.
