Keely's hat, all have found
patrons, and the men who worked
thm have made thousands by un
derstanding the fasciuation of
fraud. This country has been
prolific in useful inventions. No
pe ple elsewhere or in any times
have been so keenly endowed with
rbe inventive genius as ours. Out.
of the useful inventions, when
successful, vast fortunes have been
made, and these are the golden
baukground opon which successful
frauds out-line their promises.
The frietd combination, which
proposed to refine raw sugar by
electricity, ran a marvelous career.
The machine dilivered beautifully
pure and well-granulated sugar,
and investors leapfrogged each
other to secure stork. Just one
man who was beset by the
swindlers kept his bead. Claus
Hpreckels was taken to view the
teauHa of the process. He saw
raw sugar put into the macb'ne
and refined come out, and then be
asked. ''What becomes of tbe
dirt?" That floored the swindlers.
It proved tbat to matter Low
smart the inventor of a fraud may
be, he is sure to foiget something
that a coldy self-possessed practi
ce man will notice. Frien I had
arranged his raw sugar and his
refined all right, but had forgotten
to account for the dirt.

siderably off color, having naturally
eeased to be white. Whatever the
tint may hare been, the ladies of
the court imitated it in their laces
with fair success. The hue, or
something like it, and the rapture
it inspired have come down to the
present generation of the fair sex,
and bid fair to be transmitted to
generations of women yet unborn.
Thus it can be seen that the soiled
clothing of this royal lady gave
rise to a fashionable desire that
still holds supremacy.
The pressure upon Stanley has
at last brought out the story of
Barttelot's part in the rear column
disaster, and the extreme ferocity
and cruelty of that officer. The
story had better remained untold,
aud would have so remained had
Stanley been treated light, but
the personal attacks upon him,
finally forced the truth to the
front, and Barttelot's friends have
only themselves to accuse for the
disgrace that will fasten upon his
memory as long as the story of
the expedition is told.
