Albany by her geographical lo

importance in the near future.
The position, however, cannot be
maintained without active work
on the part of the citizens. It will
not do to sit down and think that
such a state of affairs is liound to
come an 1 all that is necessary is
to jump on wli.:n it comes around.
It must receive the active plan

produce such a condition.
There is a crises in our history
just now that if reized nwm and
thoroughly and unanimously
worked for, will lead us on to
speedy victory, but it will take the
unanimous and harmonious work
of our entire citizenship to accom

For Koaebuda of Marriage.
Let iue venture a few little
points to those of my girls who
since the summer have worn a
bright ring on their third linger:
My dear, don't let the man to
whom you are engaged to be
married pay any of the expenses
of your living or trousseau, until
you are his wife. A calico dress
and contentment are much more
to bede-iredtfcan a tine silk one
garnitured with scandal.
Don't complain to the man to
whom yon ara engaged of the
didercnt members of your own
family; it is not a good prefscc to
to matrimonial bliss.
Don't write silly letters to him.
even if he is fond of affection given

Don't expect him to love vou as
no man ha-j ever loved before; the1

the same all the world over. Be
satisfied if you have got a good,
honeet love.
Don't believe that he is a com
bination in beauty of all the ancient
sods, of all the gallant knights aud
of all the great states men ; but
conclude that he is a genileman,
and that should be your ideal.
Lon't believe that he is thinking
of you every hour of his life. He is
not ; be satisfied if he h working
away, with every now and t'ien
giving a thought to the girl lor
whom he is making a ho ne over
which he expects her to preside as
a loving, thoughtful wife.

The last act of the great munici

Time-Mountaineer, when the
council as a court endorsed the
charges of the petitioners, but
found it not judicious to remove
the mayor at this time. In other
words the council decided their
own case and adverted their lack
of courage to the people.
Charles Hermann, a half-breed

80METHIK ABOUT BOATS.
Tae Kl?er Oaly Fonr Iacaei Above Low
. w atw Mark at Albany.
There is but four inches of
water in the Willamette above the
low water mark, but with a few
days of rain the rise would be suffi
cient to warrant the boats in start
ing up. There is much specula
tion as to what vessels will ply the
upper waters this season. It ail
depends upon the action t&ken by
the Union Pacific. Should that
company operate its boats here
there would probably be three of
them, the Aioiioc, Uneut ami:
Champion. Then there are the
Oregon Pacific boats, the Three
Sisters, Bentley and Hoag. To
this must be added the independ
ent steamer Salem.
It is stated upon very reliable
authority that the upper Willam
ette is to have still another inde
pendent boat. It is said that a
company is being organized, ami
that the machinery for the new
boat has already been ordered
from the East, and that the boat
will be ready for traflh: within
sixty days. A:.d it is stated that
this will be one of the finest boats
ever put on the river, ft seems
that whether the Union Pacific
river boats run or not, or whether
the Union Pacific company buys
the Oregon Pacific boats or not,
there will be en. .ugh boats on the
upper river the coming feas-in to
kei p matters lively and to move
the freight offered with reasonable
dispatch. And this is good news
for Albany.
