THE SIL VER QUESTION.
The agitation of the silver ques
tion continues .0 be one of the
topics of interest. The Washing
ton Post says that with silver down
in the neighborhood of 135, and
selling in Washington on Friday
slightly below the Xew York quo
tation, and over 1,000,000 ounces
offered of which only 200,000 could
be taken to complete the October
purchases, there would soem to be
something of a disposition on the
part of holders to unload, especial
ly those who lia 1 s;eculative ac
counts to settle. To 10 is
certainly a big drop from' 121 '4,
the highest point which silver
reached on its first spasmodic
scramble for 1lk..L"., or parity with
gold, and it is not a pleasant fall
to contemplate for those who
bought at 1144 on the 1st of Octo
ler, nor for speculators generally
who look, but look in vain, to see
prices stimulated by the govern
ment's put chases. The latter, it
maybe remarked, aggregate II,
777,500 ounces since the new law
went into effect, and was
resumed on the 1st of November
for the current month. In
the meantime there has been an
accumulation of about 10,000,000
ounces in New York, bought up
on an exectation which will
materalize nobody knows when, it!
ever. Of this amount the sum of
nearly 7.000,000 is stored in the
vaults of the Mercbantile Safe
Deposit Company, and costs the
owners 2 cents per ounce per day
for storage, to say nothing of the
interest on the money put into in
vestment. At present quotations,
112,'... lieing the average price paid
for this silver, it is estimated that
the holdeis are about $70),000
worse otf than when they went in.
The caprices of the silver market
have thus far battled il! ordinary
calculations, and the speculators
who undertook to corner it have
only succeeded up to date in get
ting themselves info a corner.
The developments during this
month will lie awaited with a good
deal interest.
The courage and devotion of
women has been, the subject of
wonder and admiration during all
the ages of the earth, and well it
may be for in all the annals of
history the heroic self sacrifice of
women forms a conspicuous mark
in the recital, and if the incidents
of unwritten history could be
made known, the number of
courageous and heroic actions
won'd le great'y multiplied. One
of tiiese incidents recently tran
ep'red in Lima, Peru. Dr. Nicholas
Pierola, ex-president of Pern, had
been put in j iil 011 charges of dis
loyalty and also on a charge of
lieing responsible for the loss of
the last few battles of the war
bef een Boliva, Pern and Chili.
While awaiting sentence the
privilege was given his fam'.y of
di'vng witW him on Sunday. Oie
Sunday his wife, accompanied by
her childern, came as u.-u il to the
prison. The jailer did not notice
that she looked :t little more robust
than usual and that she carried a
small basket. She remained for
tipper under the plea of illness.
At 7 -J' the children were led our
by a person whom th'J jail officials
th -Might was the wife of the pris
oner. At o'clock the j lilt r came
to Pierla's tell. The prisoner
was in bed. At daybreak the next
it.ornii( all the prisoners turned
up except Pierola. His cell was
vidtcd and his wife was foun!
snu-'ly wrapped up in the bed
el thing. iiy this strategy he was
liberated and escaped to this
country.

The republicans must have all
immigrated to the Pacific coast,
judging by the election returns,
for on this coast is the only
locality where they held their own.
Grain from New Vork to Eng

If that kind of freight rates is
