POLITICS ASD 71IK VUI1LIC
SCHOOLS-
The public schools of our country
are the heritage of the people
irrespective of party affiliation,
and to the credit of nearly every
at ite in the Union it can be said
that politics have ever heen
allowed to interfere in the work
ings of the school system, an I it
is hopeful they never will.
In two of the dates, however, a
semblance of partisan strife has
c ept in namely, Wisconsin and
Illinois. It is to be legietted to
that this strife is the direct out
oine of the interference of religious
denominations. In Illin i it is
t ie Lutheren church that is seek
ing to destroy the foundation of
our liberties. The Trairie Farmer
of Chicago, 111., noted for its per
fectly non-partisan course on al'
qu -ebons, comes out in the follow
ing: "The States and the (.ieneral
(iovernn.rnt rnuat have the tiht
to educate the children within
their borders. This education is
not religious but civil. There is
no objection to the parent, or the
church, educating to religious
tenets ; yet the roan or party that
advocates interference with our
common tehool system, by a
church or sect, is no friend to free
institutions. So far as Viscon?in
and Illinois are concerned, the
question is most cogently staged
by an independent and non-partisan
daily- journal of Chicago.
Every daily; paper republican and
democratic,, lias boon .outsKken
against the usurpation sought to
tie accomplished by some minis
ters of tho Lutheran church. We
do not believe the liberty-lovinjr
Swedes and tier mans affiliating
with this chv.rch really uphold the
idea of interference in our free
school system. The excerpt from
our contemporary and which ap
plies to any State in the I'nion is
as follows: " 'There is no question
of religion or parental authority oi
interference with ' the rights,
prejudices, or free will of any
citizen of Illinois involved in the
ssue of a compulsory school law.
It simply insures every child o
the state against the willful t egket
of its parents or guardians, and
assures the state that its futuie
sovereigns shall have enough in
telligence to comprehend the
problems of government which
must devolve upon them.'
This shamless machine element
of the democratic party has vir
tually said to the chinch, Come up
and help us defeat the republican
party snd divide the Fpoils. Or
as put by an independent and
patriotic contemporary : 'Come
and help us defeat the republican?
and you may raze the school h oust p
of Illinois to 4 he ground. The lee
the people know, the less the
can read and write and think in
the English language, the belter
f r you, the better for us. Let u
iik the enemy firt and share ii,
l.e spoils afterward. You tak.
the school, we will be content
wi'h the offices.'
We do not belie ve thai :nle
pendent thinking democrat.- or in
dependent thinking republican
will ceede to this proposition of
the baser element of a party

have combfttcd questions of

LlElTLSAXT Tkllll', who was
with Major Barttelot and the rear
guard of Stanley's late expedition,
r.-sents with much reason certain
ciiticisms which Stanley has al
lowed himself since his return to
England. Hh says that Manlcy
was perfectly v.ell acquainted with
P.arttelot, and that he is ret-ponsi-ble
for any blunders that the
latter mad.
Morn than this, Lieutenant
Troup says th it while Stanley is
a great explorer, he went into this
list expedition foi fati.e and for
what he could get out of it, and
not from any philanthropic
motives. The expedition, says
Troup, was in the nature oi a
speculation, the capitalists who
backed it being alter the ivory
which Emin Pasha was supposed
a certain share of the big supply
if ivory which was expected as a
reward for their services.
Makiii-jr all due allowances for
Troup's friendship for his immedi
ate superior, Major Harttelot, there
is a great ileal in what he says
The relief of Kmin, who did not
want to he relieved, was doubt
less a secondary consideration,
anil the expedition, even in the
light in which Stanley puts it,
does nut add a single leaf to the
laurel crown which Stanley earned
by his earlier expli rations and ex
peditions. The motive was greed
lor fame and riches, instead of
ipiiiianity.
The repoit of the director of

The prosperity of the country can
be partially attributed to this fact.
