ALL ON THE ACCOUNT OF
Til A T TERRIBLE TA RRIFF.
The greed of humanity seizes
upon every pretext to fatten njon
its fellows, and at present the
feverish wish of partisanship to
saddle obloquy upon the acts of
the present cougret-a, gives au op
port unity for the assumption of
that greed.
The Tribune gives an exposition
of this matter, and it says that be
cause prices of many articles are
higher than a month ago or a year
ago, it is falsely alleged that the
new tariff is making neceesaries of
life more costly. The assertion
has not even a grain of excuse in
facts, though it is true that tome
dishonest and short-sighted dealers
are taking advantage of popular
ignorance, and marking up price?
of goods wtrch the tariff does no'
affect in the least, using that
measure as their pretext. Con
sumers can punish this extoi lion,
if they chose, by transferring their
trade to merchants who are mere
honest. That they may have
some light to guide them, a brief
review of pi ires may be timely.
Breadstuff's are h:gher than a
month ago, aid much higher than
a year ago, P"d the reason which
controls the trade is found in the
, official report of the Department
of A.ici'l'iue, ehowing that the
t'-osta last winter and the drouth
last summer caused a loss of about
00,000,000 bushels of wheat, about
a fifth of the corn crop and about
2JO,000,000 bushel of oate. The
t trill did not cause cither the
frosts or the drouth, nor has it
caused the recent advance in dairy
products, nor I he u cent decline
in some vegetables and in
cattle. V. ith a r-hort crop of co: n,
g products are nafrsHy hi-lier,
but the supply of hogs has ltcen so
large that the effect is as yet bni
little felt. Sug.ar, hops ami rice
cost just what they did a month
ago, and coffee is a litt'e lower.
On the whole fai in product in . the
east are much dearer than usual,
but owing to causes with which
as yet tftio tariff has nothing to do
Cotton Is a little lower than a
' month ago, while print cloth?,
sheetings and other cotton fabrics
have not changed iu price. Wool
is a shade higher, on many grade?
about one cent pei pound, but no
change has yet been made in
pi ices of woolen goods of domestic
make, and if higher prices are by
anybody charged for imported
wo ilens, it is on goods which were
imported at the old rato of duties,
so that an advance in price is
simply taking advantage of cus
tomers. Carpets and flannels are
quoted iut as they were a month
ago, and also boots and shoes, but
ntbe latter a moderate advance
was made tome time before the
tariff passed, on account of the
higher prices of hides and of
leather. Since the act has passed
liides have not changed at ell and
letther is a little lower. There
lias oeen no cnange in iron or
feel, or any of their important
products since the new bill passed
1m plates were advanced about a
month before the act paeaed by
beavv buyng abroad in order to
Import into this country, though
the new duty does not take effect
until July I, 1891. T:n is ad've
in speculation, though the new-
law makes no clipniie for three
years in the duty, a id copper has
not changed in price. Lead and
products of lead h.nl advanced
hurplyj before September, lx-
cause of influences existing pnor
to the passage of the act. Lumber
and brick are lower than a month
ag, and "me, lath, gtass, pai:iU
and paper are unchanged.
The truth is that the new tariff
does not enhance the cost of a
nincle necessary of !;fe, but
rj -
r. in i tliH duties on manv. If
lrgher prices are charged byj
dealers for any necessary of life,
and the tariff is mentioned as an
excuse, the customer may know
that he is being cheated, and he
cm find more honest traders who
mike no such exaction. The cost
of living has inde 1 been enhanced
by the partial failure of important
crops, Tid the effect of that serious
loss is not fully felt perhaps.'But
there is no manufactured product,
in any measure a necessary of life,
the coat of which has up to this
time been affected in the least by
tho tariff. Tlio political tricksters
who pretend the contrary need
the merited correction of defeat in
November.

fuse to sell sugar beet seed to come
into this country, is a story that
bordera extremely upon the "thin"
onle. Germany nor r.o other
country is going to enquire very
closely into where beet seed goes,
proviJed a good paying market
arises for it. Even if she does,
this country is already supplied
with sugar beets enough to supply
the reed market. California alone
could supply the whole country.
The papers of tho state, alinoet
unanimously agree upon the ad
visability of the state legislature
making a sufficient appiopriation,
t meet the requirements of a full
and adqeuate exhibition ot our
products at the Chicago World's
F?'r. The exact amount of that
appropriation is a matter f r
future consideration but it should
be ample.
. The herculean task of proving
all the frosts, dronehts, rusts 3tc,
that may have affected different
portions of our commonwealth, are
caused solely and surely by the
usury law, is about on the level
with the accusation that all the
advance in prices is caused by the
