LAMD8.
Ovm dispatches yesterday morn
ing contained an item saying that
an appropriation had been made
tor the purpose of urveying public
lands. Ia the appropriation was
I twenty thousand dollars , for Ore
gon. This will bs most welcome
naws to many industrious hard
working saoatters upon the unsur-
. Teyed UndanziooelT waiting for
iaf for the surreys to be made so
that they could make the proper
Alios and settlement to acquire
title to their homesteads and pre
emptions. Especially is this the
case in the newly opened up
country oa the 8antiam, which
the Oregon Pacific, in its eastern
Mfanutaa. has brooabt into
prominence 'and great demand
There ia a Urge quantity of excel
lent land that the survey will scon
transform into productive far me
and hansY homes, and there are
thousands of acres of magnificent
mountain timber land that the
surrey would make available for
purchase under the timber land
act. This land should be placed
in the market as eeon as possible
for it i valuable only for its tim
ber, sad year by year the ires,
accMeatally or carelessly started
at into and destroy this timber,
which if conveyed into private
possession weald , be almost im
mediately utilized. The lands
within the surveyed limits kiave
been ttken and are being rapidly
.. utilised, and building up large in
dustries that are of ureat benefit
to the country. This is the case
at Mill City, whose fine mountain
lumber this season ia building up
a wide spread reputation. Farther
op, opposite Gatesville is Leedy A
Santtaor's mill and others, snd still
farther up is Brown's Mill, now
called Viagars, which has built up
quite a settlementand will develop
a large business. Two miles
farther up the Green Basin Lum
bering company are preparing fo
a large business with the best kind
f facilities.
These' enterprises are already in
operation on the surveyed lands,
where title can now be acquired,
and just as soon as the survey is
made se that title can be acquired
to the land, very many more like
i -, - . ;,i
enterprises w a use nature win
spring up all along- the line in the
timber regions.
The land and localities under
consideration are also fitted in
many instances for agricultural
and horticultural occupation, and
if improved would add greatly to
the resources ex the state, a be
survey should be made at once.
Vitia-FkssiowrrTHOMrsoM of the
Chaste National bank is evidently
not afraid of the Hohenzollen
board He said that silver can go
to a party with gold at our ratio
without causing any of the silver
atf Europe to find its way to this
country. Of course bis confidence
a this point is due to knowledge
of the fact that European silver
coin is overvalued as compared
with American silver coin, and
that it would consequently be a
vary foolish thing for its holders to
sand it to this country, and by so
doing subject themselves to trans
portation charge and a discount
ameuatiag to the difference be
tween the ratios of 1S$ and 16.
Mr. Thompson did not explain
himself fully to the reporter by
whom he was snterviewed, or b
might probably have astonished
that gentleman by telling him
that well-informed silver men are
net afraid of tbe country being
iooded with foreign silver, but
that they do sometimes fear that
unless the ratios of Europe and
America are equalized tbe former
may succeed in drawing from us
our stock ol silver in the event ei
bimetallism - being - generally
restored.
Thb New York World, if it did
not start the false stcry that Amer
can . manufacturers sold more
cheaply to foreigners than to the
domestic purchasers, at least gave
it wide circulation. To back up
the yarn they printed what pur
ported to be a price list of S. L.
Allen & Co., manufacturers -af
agricultural implements in Phils
dslphis. In this publkwijan the
prices of the firm to Iha . trade for
export were represented' as retail
prices, and alongside of them were
placed the American retail rate.
Of course this made it appear that
the American fanner was paying;
a great deal more for an article
made in this country than a
foreigner was called upon to pay
for a similar article. As soon
as the matter was brought to the
attention of Allen & Co., they
addressed a letter to the World in
which its statements were shown
to be absolutely false, and evidence
was furnished to show that prices
which tlie New York free-trade
paper represented to be retail
rates were really jobbers rates.
and precisely such rates as are
given every American jobber. Of
course tbe World refused to pub
lish this refutation of its misrepre
sentation, aad so the lie is still
going the rounds of the democratic
press and will continue to circulate
so long as there i any one foolish
enough to believe any statement
appearing in a free-trade journal.
a. r. unronicie.
Thb West Shore iB very oppor
tunely taking up the matter of
awakening an interest in the ex
hibit to b- made at the World's
Fair at Chicago. Tbe latest num
ber contains a well executed car
toon representing the present
situation. It presents the picture
of the two Oregon Commissioner.-'
carrying strung on a pole across
their shoulders, the Oregon ex
hibit consisting of sacks ot hayseed
and moss an apple ana pear, a
squash and a small wisp of grain
from Lane, while in the distance
immense trains represent the ex
hibits of Califoraia and Washing
ton speeding for Chicago. It tells
the story well, and our people
snould raise up and begin to pre
pare for an exhibit that will do
credit to our state that is second to
none in the Union.
f hs census office business seems
to he one continual wrangle. The
result.as to a recount for the state
of Oregon is still problematical
with perhaps the chances against
the recount. The ways of the cen
sus business seems past fin ling
out, and eheir only plea now for
refusing the recount is their
claimed finding of irregularities in
he recounting of Portland. That
however, they failed to show, and
in reality they have no a v,s'ige
of grounds for making an accusa
tion of that nature.
