Mrs. C. Jessee, formerly Miss
Nettie Curl, of Prinevule, Crook
county, met with an accident that

the side posts, which frightened
he horses and they proceeded to

turned. In some way Mrs.
Jeseee's left leg was broken in a
most horrihle manner. The large
bone just below the knee was
broken, and both bones just above
the ankle were broken entirely off
and apparently crushed, the splin
ter of one protuumg through tne

Kaum Investigation.
Washington, Oct. 2. Judge
Sawyer, on behalf of the major
ity of the Kaum committee, stated
to-night to the Associated Press
reporter that h learned with sur
prise that the mirority report has
been given out It was well un
derstood by the committee that
the evidence was not all in and
the' investigation not yet closed.
Taking up the allegations in the
minority report one by one, Judge
Sawyer said there was not one of
the statements that tie believed
was borne out by evidence, in
complete though it was.

wide and half a mile long, in
which abound myriads of trout.
Another Suicide.

Yesterday Geo. Fiankell 70 years
old, committed suicide nearShing
letown in Shasta county, by shoot
ing himself through the heart with
a shot gun. Two weeks ago he
was married to a lady 50 years old,
who came here from Kansas to see
him, and to whom he was engaged
30 years ago.

Grape Seriously Threatened
San Francisco, Oet. 2. The
State Viticnltural bureau reported
to-day that great anxiety was felt
in various parts of the state on
account of recent heavy rains. At
Li vermore there are over 1200 tons
of gras on the ground, valued at
$15,000, and unless the weather
changes for the better they will
a'l have to go. In other districts
there is said to be less sugar in
grapes now than there was four
weeks ago.

Arizona Affairs.
Washington. Oct. 2. The af
fairs of the territory of Arizona
durini; the fiscal year just closed,
are detailed in the report made to
the Secretary of the Interior Dy
N. C. Murphy, acting governor.
He states that be is unollioially
informed that the recent census
shows a population in the territory
of 67,600, exclusive of Indians and
military reservations, and with
those who live on reservations

the territory probably will exceed
60,000. The mining industry, the
report states, is in a more healthy
condition than ever, but the great
est aUention is being paid to ug-T

ness of the lands mid owing to the
restrictive legislation in Idaho,

action in Utah, the acting govern
or thinks the immigration ol
mormons to Arizona will increase.
A large number of mormons are
now in the territory und are esti
mated at one-fifth of its population.
The reports state that unless
restruct've measures are adopted
the territory will become mormon
ized to such an extent as to seri
ously disturb society, or affairs ol
the government and prejudice the
territory's chances lor statehood.
He therefore recommends congress
tlo - grant some protection to An
zona as is enjoyed by Idaho, and
that also the oath be made appli
cable to Arizona.

express robbery was committed on
the Cincinnati, Sandusky ocOleve-

Immediately after the train left
Urhaua, two masked men with
cocked revolvers eutered the. ex
piess car and compelled the

Sc udder, to throw up his hands.
They tied him securely, and rob
bed the sate of packages contain
ing several thousand dollars and
other valuables. While at ivork.a
brakeman attempted to enter the
car and wa- shot at by one of the
robbers. He gave the alarm and
the train slowed up to give an op
portunity to capture the robbers,
but they jumped from the train
just as it was entering West Lib
erty, and disappeared in I e dark
ness.
Messenger Scudder was bound
in his chair. One of the robbers
tried to kill Scudder before leaving
the car. Placing a revolver at hi
head he pulled the trigger, but the
cartr-dge failed to explode. The
other robber then prevented him
trying again.
When the train pulled out of
Vst Liberty, the two scoundrels
ag iin got aboard, holding the en
tire crew at bay. Scudder, who
haa been released, opi ned tire on
them with a pist il from his car
loor, but was compelled to retreat.

202 souls, of whom 32 are chil

appointments in connection with

Olympia people are in a high
state of glee over the activity of

ity. The Notrhern Pacific has its
right of way along the bay into
the center of the town piled and
has already began to fill in. The
Union Pacihc is no less active, and
the Oregon Improvement is a good
third. It is expected that Olvmpia
will take a big stride forward as
the roads are actually in the city,
and predictions are freely made
that the oldest town in the state
will have the latest and largest
boom.

which she was deta ned in the

W. D. Haynes, president of the
Bristol. Elizabethton & North
Carolina railroad, attempted sui
cide in this city this afternoon.
He used an ax, and inflicted sev
eral wounds, but will probably
recover. Ill-health ia thought to
be the cause of the attempt on his
