WANTS TO COME IS.
It ba become entirely certain
that the question of annexation
ban become a leading issue in the
lominion of Canada, and that in
many portions of that country the
subject of admission into the
United states is openly and gener
ally advocated.
Perhaps the most mgniticant
utterances on this subject of late
are those of the ljueber
Telegraph, one of the government
organs. This paper sys : "If we
are' permitted to gauiie current
events in Canada we think that
annexation to the I'niteJ states is
making great headway among the
people. It is coming, and that be
fore long. Sir John may preach
all kinds of doctrines; h may
climb upon Johnny Bull's back
and become the last man on earth
to accept the platform, but dollars
and cents will bring it about. The
McKinley bill is paused by a large
majority, and that deals a hard
blow to the commerce of Canada.
England, we are told, is as read
to give op Canada and Newlound
landas Heligoland."
This ia very strong language,
even in a newspaper of the French
provinces of Quebec, which has
never Krn wholly satished with
the English domination. The
article goes on to say : "England
is neither a mother nor a friend to
us. We have nattered her too
much, and now is the time, when
one of her sovereign's grand
children is hero, that we should
talk as plainly as possible of the
situation. How would brother
Jonathan meet us with an expres
sion of joy? Property would boom
and commerce with the worM
world would be carried on whieli
would bring comfort aud glory to
the masses."
More than a year ago, when
commercial union with Canada
was being discussed considerably,
it was said that political union
wonld preeede couimeicial union,
and that our true policy wan to go
on about our own but-inees and
wait for Canada to come to us.
It would seem that the time i
near at hand; that the Canadian-
have come to see where their true
. interests lie, and that before long
no Canadian militia colonel, like
Gray, will have any right to pull
down the Stars and Strips on
Canadian soil. Great Britain caree
nothing for Canada, and her
neglect has worn out even the fig
ment of loyalty which the Cana
dians had retai led for the mother
country. There will come an
amicable separation, and this will
be followed by overtures on the
part of Canada for admission to
the Union.
TuaRK are now 942 submarine
tables, exclusive of the seven
Atlantic cables, with an agm-gatc
of 112,740 nautical milen. The
overland telegraph is already a
world-wide institution, in wliirh
there is a total of l,tiK0,SM miles
of wire enough of the attenuated
to go around the equatorial heir o:
the globe just thirty times. The
United States has 77t,5'M) miles l
wire, and in 18S9 had no less than
56,000,000 message traveling tlie
country. France haiI'JO.S'.tO miles
of wire on which in lisH er
transmitted 30,05 i.UHO dispatches,
(treat Britain ha hung up 180,600
miles of metal line and in IhS'.i
sent 50,000,000 messages of their
silent flight.
In many cases where the power
of the law steps in and lays its
strong hand upon individuals, t
restrain or correct them, it does
seem extremely diihcult to under
stand the justice of the proceed
ings.' An instance of tt.is sort
receives the Tribune's sharp criti
cism in the following: When a
dissolute woman, in a tit of drunken
recklessness, jumps overboard
froua a steamboat, it is projter to
lock her up on a charge of attempt
ing suicide. But why, in the
pam wi coiumonseiioe, should her
male companion!), who first made
her drunk and thea urged her;
desperate art upuu her, be per- :
niit :ed to go free? If she be guilty j
of attempted self-murder, they are :
guilty of inciting to murder, and
that ia an offence which should
not go unpunished.
Architects' sometimes receive
severe critieisni. Perhaps this is
as sarcastic as they usually arrive
at. "A church spire in Illinois
was lifted into the air yesterday
by a tornado, reversed and dropped
small end foremost through the
roof. Considering the architectural
quality of most church spires, it
is not impossible that the new
position of the one in question is
an improvement."
New York ci'y has tin-.lly
adopted a desiirn for the Grant
monument. The action in con
gress, vikin towards the removal
of Gra. 's remains to Washington,
forced 'lis movement, and rnw
there wi probably be an earne-t
endeavor. ttulleef sufficient funds
lor theer fn of the inoiiumenly
making penny collect'' ns through
the country. Gre itis New York
but the country must foot the hill.
Is Montana ani Minnesota the
.uteriin iiettweii snow stunts was
just barely lig enough to allow
of the promised f-eed time ami har
vest, by crow ding them H4 close to
gether as possible.
The jublicaiiou over the returns
from Vermont were not of long
duration. Maine's eleition came
too soon hr tfter, and now all is
as still an I iiiet as a church
mouse.
