KOBE OF THE CHURCH TROUBLE.
To Tim Kditoh tux Hkkalo:
While I am satisfied that the
public mind is not in the least im
paired in relation to the truthful
ness and .veracity of Elder J . Bow
ersox and Hollenbaugh, both gen
tlemen are pei-onallv known here,
notwithstanding the assaults of
Mr. Fisher.
I did not want to discuss this
matter further, as the time is coin
ing when wind and reality will be
placed upon the scales and the
public made acquainted with the
deep inwardness of this church
riot.and the wicked perpetrators.
I should not have paid anv atten
tion to Mr. Fi-Iter's trah had he
uut diuileJ to the church in Al
b.i.iy, ol which I am a member
ami w nich ,hefore his pastoral
ctii.ge, was in lellowsiiip and bar
mony At the recent coiiieience
bis term ol oilice expired, but tieing
111 possession ot the property, still
sponges his rent off the church,
and lias made his boasts that pos
session is nine points in law, and
the key which lie had in his pocket
was tin tenth. So you see he ad
mits that he is an intruder.
Shame on such men claiming to be
ministers ol the gospel
He repoits that there are )nly
tour or five relieis, as he calls
them, in the church at Albany, as
he skylarks aiouud.
Iet me name them that the
public may have a ch-mce to make
themselves acquainted with at
least one of this preacher's state
ments.
D. MctJregor, Amos Howard, D
W. Jones, E. B. Purdom, deceased,
Misan rurdom, hliabeth N. Jones,
Esther Warner, Levona Purdom,
Clara Deirmger, Laura AlcUregor,
Harriet llell'roii, Lucinda Farvvell,
tannic Hmemau, Louisa Auger
brght, Cynthia E. Ross, Eliza M.
I- ron k and othets that will not ac
cept him as the pastor.
These were all members of the
church when he came here except
one. They belong to it yet, but
not of his kind, who how to a sus
pended bishop, 111 direct violation
of the discipline.
.Mr. tisher lias a great deal to
say about the rebels. Fathtr Pur
u.'iu, an oiu soldier 01 the cross
we aie all well acquainted with
him and know of his sore afflic
tions for years held the keys,
whoe tottering limb had so often
cairied bis fading body to his old
Evangelical home, a place of hid
soul's delight. For years he rang
the bell and built the fires ; yes,
he delighted in doing his Master's
will. But for the last few months
prior to his death, because he
would not yield to the rule of a
suspended bishop ami forsake the
laws of the discipline that had
governed him through nearly all
ol his religious life, he was com
pelled to remain away or si.critice
principle. He prefeired principle.
1'hough robted of his home 111 the
churcn, he gave us his testimony
in the parting breath that the
Ixjrd would not rob him of his
home in heaven.
Father i'urdom staying aay
from church did not suffer. Mr.
I'isher on two occasions entered
the house of Father Purdom, aud
while lying 011 the couch of his
ittliction told him that he was a
rebel.
Could the public believe that
there was such a tyrant in the city
of Albany? Bui let him deny it.
Only cowards indulge in such con
duct. The key that Father Purdom
carr ed for years failed to unlick
the door at the time of conference
umier the new dispensation of a
suspended bishop assuming the
function of a bishop in good stand
ing. At the meeting -of the recent
conference in Aluany D .Vlciregor,
one 01 ihe trustees of the church
(i-ut not a Bowmanite), and in
possession of toe key that Father
Purdom had cariied" lor years to
unlock the door of the church an
old relic when he (McGregor)
was ordered by the presiding1 elder,
C. C. Polling, to open the door, :
the key failed to do the work. !
Some fellow versed in police liter.t- j
ture had no doubt been there. The j
question is, w ho was it that had '
been tampering with the lock on 1
the church d'Kr . .
But further, Mr. Fisher had been
eave dropping or perhaps acting
as a det'-ctive, as we would per
ceive from the literature he pre-
ters, out De that as it may. On
Saturday evening following the
opening of conference Mr. Fisher
went out to Mr. McGregor's house.
seven or eight miles in the conn-
try, toll his wife hist, then went
10 the held where Mr. McGregor
was plowing and told him he had
a very painful dutv to perform:
that he (McGregor) had been
guilty of an attempt to break into
a house (we know that means a
penitentiary act), and that if he
did not withdraw from the church
he would be compelled to have
him arrested. McGregor was not
one oi the Bowman worshipe s,
and if Fisher could bulldoze him
hy false threats to withdraw from
ti e church it would rend-r Mc
Gregor's office as trust- e vacant.
Readers of the Hekalo, what
hit k you of such unholy conduct
and by a would-1 e preacher? This
is the unfair way in which he un
dertakes to get "the control of the
church property. The highway
man at an unsuspected moment
assails his victim with a drawn
and cocked revolver and com
mands him to deliver up his money
or he will fire.
. Bowersox is admitted only in
two church buildings a- presiding
elder. Rev. Youst has charge at
Sweet Home, Kev. Bollinger a
Salem, Kev. Diek at East Port
land and Rev. Hirscluier at Al
bina. It will he remembered that
thee four ministers stood with
Bowersox at the conference, and
it would be folly to sav that In-
would not be admitted among his
own ministers. . t isher save ten
or twelve churches. I know of
only three others Albany, one lie-
low tiregon city and one in hast
Portland now in litigation. Fisher
has a great ileal to say about the
brazen eleven that they are drop
ping out of the mdiistrv. First
Dr. Locke and i-trayor, of Salem,
lie knows that thee two have not
been taking work from the conier
ence for several yean-. I'hey preach
occasionally, as they have done.
Fisher says that Mr. Beaucamp, 01
the eleven,, has went to work in a
saw-mill. I do not know whether
this is true or not. If it is true. I
do know tst it is more creditab'e
of him tl an be who would bum
his tent off the church.
Mr. Fisher closes his article by
saying that he prefer the Police
New s rather than a religious pa per,
and then immediate!) follows by
saying, "Yours in defense of the
church." What! Stigmatize the
church? blacken the cause of n
I gion? A' man of his calrbre to
cssuine such a responsibility d. -liver
us from such satanic maj -sty.
The people here no i.oubt won
dered why we did not accept Fisher
s our pastor. In this art cle is
contained our reasons. Compare
Bowersox and Hollenbaugh with
Fisher and you can soon deter
mine who is tel'ing the tru:!i in
relation to this church trouble.
