    Absent Legislator.
Prom the American Onner,
The long session of Congress and .
the lot weather have thinned out
the ranks of mem tier of Congress
in Washinton, so that the disposal
of certain measure of very great
importance to the business inter
ests of the country is delayed, and
the wheels ot industry ire held in
suspense until it is known ' how
they will be decided.- Whatever
difference of opinion exist regard
ing certain measures, members 'of
Congress owe it to themselves and
the country, 10 have them, decided
one way or the of her. There are
two bills, however, the passage of
which would do much to . insure
the business prosperity,. of . the
country, via., the Tonnage -bill
and the Tariff bill.- The Tariff bill
affects almost every branch of in
dustry. Manufacturers re unable
to make their contracts (or supplies
many of which, are drawn from,
distant points and even foreign
countries. They are in the dark
as to what markets they , will be
able to count on for their products.
Importers are rusbii i in and piling
up supplies of goads- .which-' they
think are likely to be affected by
the tariff. Money ' markets ' are
thU9 deranged and capital diverted
from customary .channels, to the
S rent detriment of legitimate ''in
ustry. American shipping inter
ests have been hanging by the Eye
lids ror some time, waiting, for the
favorable action of ConSress, which
seemed assured to place us upon
an equality with the shipping of
other nations. The Tonnage bill
has passed the Senate and is . now
pending in the House. It is hop
ed absent members of Congress
will return long enough to pass the
above mentioned measures.
Tfcw Weight of Dollar Bill.
Do you know how many one
dollar bids it tkes to. weigh ,.aa,
much as a $20 gold .piece ?! . Driv
ing out to White Bear recently one'
of those walking compendiuras of
useful information sprung: .the
above query, and the opinions
that it elicited show a' remarkable
range. One member of the party
whose tusinessit is to handle
money in large. Bums, after,. pro
found thought suggested that the
number would be from 1000 to 1200.
Others guessed down the line to
500, hut no one less than that
number. - After all had placed
memseives on record, trie com pen
dium stated that the number of
bills was 30 or 31, according to
their condition as to dutiness and
age. Pioneer Press.
A Best Child ofthe Baa-Intent.
Wag graduated last month from
the Alexander-v arien institute in
V areaw. Her name is Marie Keks
nolui and her age is just 16 years.
In the last Turkish war she was
picked up from the ruins of a burn
ed and deserted town by the colonel
of the Russian grenadier regiment
of the emperor of Russia. The
member? of the regiment voted, as
K)on as they went into camp, to
support and educate the little
Turkish" girl at their expense.
They contributed enough immedi
ately to set their plan in operation
and have continued ever since to
buy their ward all that she desired.
Five weeks ago they decided to
give her a handsome dowry when
the should . he ready to marry.
Marie has a beautiful face and a
keen mind, and it is expected that
she will get her husband from the
regiment that adopted her.
