MINISTERIAL BASE BALL.
A couple of weeks airo, in tbe
faithful discbarge of tbe duty of a
public journal as tbe chronicler of
current events, the Herald noted
among its other news the down
fall of the Rev. R. E. Howell, ol
Illinois, whose sin was croquet.
While his flock was gathered at
the church for the Wednesday
evening prayer meeting the Rev.
. Mr. Howell was at Brot ier Purdy's
playing, off a tie. Little did we
think tha we should so soon be
called upon to retrord the troubles
of another clergy man, also brought
on by out-door sports ; but to this
extremity. are we reduced, the par
ticulara being furnished by that
staid old newspaper, the New York
Tribunes '
In .Rockland, New York, there is
a Methodjst, Episcopal church or
ganization, with- a small but neat
building for worship. Last April
the. Rev, Frank Forsythe whs as
signed to this' charge. The rever
end gentleman in a young man.
and he was ordained but a ahor
time before going to Rockland.
But he is educated, intelligent,
with gifts as an orator aud with
pleasing social manners. For a
time he gave universal satisfac
tion. In evidence of this we have
only to say that between the 13th
of April and the 26th of June, in
clusive, he was presented with
eight pairs of slipiwrs. On, June
27 there began tc be ominous whin
pers about hini. It was charged
that he smoked cigars ai.d played
croquet (alas again the fatal
game!), and that he "joked and
laughed with chance acquaint
ances, lnese tarings nn nock
greed to overlook on account oi
his youth, but tht-y could not over
look the next, thing which, burst
upon thein like thunder - from
clear sky. It was found that he
engaged in match games of base
ball !
It was charged on July 8 by Mrs
Deacon Pettingill that the Rev
Mr. Forsythe had. taken bis best
pair of slippeis, iriven him by Mist
Mary Carpenter put spikes in tbe
soles , ot tnem and was wearing
them white playing ball, greatly
to tbe benefit of hi base-ruuuin
This charge was disproved on Julj
12. But the young minister con
tinued to play, and the elders ol
tbe- church took ". the matter in
band. Tney called him to account,
. but be refuted to recognize the:r
authority to say what games be
should or should not indulge in
The meeting was' a stormy .one.
Tbe elders returned to their homes
with downcast beads, while the
minister went over in Ezra Green's
back pasture and took 'tkem hot
off the bat for two hours, defeat
ing the New burg club by a acore
of .13 to 1. - But the worst was to
come. '. The conference we have
just spoken of . wan held July 18.
On Sunday, July 27, the Rev. Mr.
Forty the arose in his place in
church at .the usual hour, and
after, giving notice of the meeting
of the Ladies' Aid Society at Sin
ter Buraell's Monday afternoon,
the ice-cream festival for the ben
efit of the new organ at Sister Bay
ard's Tuesday evening, the usual
prayer meeting Wednesday even
- ing,nd aeveral other things of
minor importance, he added that
there ! wool J e a picnic in I'ut
nain'ri grove Thursday, the money
raided to go into the church debt
fund. - "Among other attractions,''
continued 'he pastor, '"there will
be singing, speaking, and so forth,
to conclude at 4 o'clock with a
match game of base hall between
the Rockland nine and the Mid
dletown Terrors, ii which your un
worthy shepherd hopes to go be
hind the bat for the home club,
with. Jim Shackley in the box
All are invited to be present." The
next Sunday, August 3, the elders
locked the pastor out of the church.
He promptly sent in his resigna
tion. -Ji considerable minority of
the more liberal minded of the con
gregation instantly rallied round
frim pd otgaoixed the Free ilaVU-:
odist church, with the Rev. Mr.
I Forayihe as their pastor. They
hired the Roscoe school-house for
a temporary place of worship,
where the reverend gentleman
preached Sunday to a- large and
sympathetic audience fnJm the
text, "Where are the nine?"
When the Rev. R. E. Howell, of
IlliopolU, 111., was deposed we
were able to approve of it. His
congregation did not object to his
playing croquet, only to his taking
a lantern and going out and play
ing when he should have been at
prayer meeting, aud in this they
were right. But the case of the
Rev. Mr. Forsythe is radically dif
ferent. We are not told that he
went out Sunday morning when
he should have been holding ser
vices and put on a mask and
padded gloves and jumped up for
high balls and ran for fouls. We
do rot find him out Wednesday
evening sliding for second or steal
ing third. As for the announce
ment of the ball game iu the pul
pit it was no worse than to an
nounce the singing, the swings or
the lemonade. The ball game was
legitimate, and much better, we
should say, than many church
fairs where a man pi in ten and
takes out one, and oftentimes a
verv little one at that.
The tight grip on money in Wall
street does not threaten the ave
uues of brines in Oregon. Farm
ers have good crops aud ill get
air priceH, aud a ill have money
of their own without borrowing.
The trouble in Wall t-treei will
probably be of fdiort duration.
Tuk Oregon state fair will open
on Monday, September 15. It
promises to be a successiul exhibit.
