The engagement of the great
emotional actress, Maud tiranger,
is one of the prin:ipal topics of
conversation among our society
people and theater-goers in gen
eral. The coming of this famous
beauty and favorite artiste will be
an event far fiom the ordinary. It
will give our theater-goers an op
portunity of seeing such a per
formance as would be given on the
staes of Wallack's, the I'nion

the fashionable theaters of New

Thuae Indian Win,
Men who lived in Oregon during
the 40's and 50's and through the

faith in the claims of Major

claims to have fought in the Mal

assisting in the capture of
forty-two women after what he
terms the Malheur massacre. In
dian war veteran.-) here say that
there was no Malheur river massa-

that there were no lorty-lwo

EEV- MR. FISHEa REPLIES AO All.
o Tin Editoi or thi Hkkild:
In answer to the article of J.
Holleribaugli in Thk Hkrald of
the 22d inst., which is deceptive
and misleading, permit me to
make the following correction :
Mr. Hollenbaughsays: "Instead
of three minority conferences, as
stated by Fisher, there are seven,
and these seven conferences have
only 10,000 members, less than
one half of the entire membership
of the whole chrrch." Now, to
state it mildly, I would say Mr
llollenbaugh knew hs was mis
representing the facts when he
wrote those lines. Does not Mr
ii. know that the 21 loyal confer
ences will never recognize the se
ceding factions of the conferences
that have disrupted? And yet he
counts these pseudo conferences in
order to make up the number
seven "minority conferences."
And again, does not Mr. H. know
that in the conferences that have
disrupted a great many of the lay
members ate loyal. and will not
recognize the seceding preachers?
Reader, is this not true of the
church in Albany? and not only
in Albany, but our best and largest
congregations in Oregon are stand
ing tir in again-t this wicked rebel
1 on in the chinch so much so that
out of ten or twelve church building-
which Mr. Boweraox has on
In- jo-.-;illed district only two are
op it to him. So also in the dis
rupted Illinois conference, w hich
has over ll.iHH) members, the great
majority are loytd to the church.
I hen, again, does Mr. H. know
.hat in the three conferences that
have a unijoriiy in favor of the op
position there ate many preacher.
.uid members w ho will not go w ith
I he oMjMitioti, w ho don't think
anot h r denomination is needed,
Sot w ilt tand fiiui hy the ch irch?
ilow, ihen, dare Mr. II. tell the
readers of this paper that there are
-even minority conferences, and
leave the impiessiou that all the
ministers and members of the said
"seven conferences" are standing
hy tlie opposition . Here in Ore
goii the biagof "eleven" are grow
ing less all the time. Quite re
cently Mr. Keauchamp, one of the
eleven, left his Held and has gone
to Kast Portland to work in a taw
mil!. This is the fourth one that
has dropped out from the number
of eleven, and from indications the
nipping is getting pretty short for
some oi the re.t of the eleven.
Mr. H. says: "There are also
other conferences that have been
w hipped into line by the Episco
pal lash which cannot be kept
there." Will Mr. llollenbaugh
please favor us with the names of
those conference"?
I say it is untrue yea, it is a
slander on the good name and
character of the members of the
loyal c inferences for Mr. H. to
make such a statement, and now
if he knows his statement to be
true he will give the names of the
conferences he refers to. Will he
do it?
The leaders of Jhk Hkrald will
notice that Mr llolleiibaugii ad
mits that the faction with which
he is holding forth is greatly in the
minority, even according to his
false count. What, then, is the
duty of the minority?
Mr. II . advises me to read the
Evangelical . (This Evangelical is
the opposition paper;. Thank you,
Mr. 11. ; when 1 get ready to read
the class o: literature to which the
Evangelical belongs, I think I can
find something even better the
Police News, for instance.
Yours in defense of the church,
I. B. FlSIIEH.
