In reply to a recent communica
tion published in the Hkrald, the
Oregonian. under the heading of
"No Offense, Kind Neighbor,"
says :
A soft answer turneth awav
wrath, but grievous words stirreth
up strife."
In an account of the trm made
up the vallev hv a nartv of Omaha
council men, published in Sunday's
Oregonian, through one of those
unaccountable blunders which
will occasionally occur in typeset
ting and proof reading, the word
Albany" was omitted in the fol
lowing sentence :
Owing to the San Francisco
express having been delayed, the
train got behind time, and so a
verv brief stop was made at Salem,
and fast time was made from there
to Albany, where dinner was fur
nished."
The editor of the Albany Her
ald allows a correspondent to
make this omission the occasion
for saying some very harsh and
unjust things in regard to the Ore
gonian. The omission was noticed
and regretted, but as in a para
graph just below the other the
name of Albany was mentioned in
connection with the fine fruit, etc.,
presented the partv there, no
reference to the unfortunate omis
sion was deemed necessary.
The party was highly pleased
with the cordial greeting they re
ceived at Albany and greatly ad
mired the fine display of fruits
made, and surprised and delighted
when the whole display was be
stowed upon them. Their only
regret was that it was impossible
lor them to stay long enough to
enjoy the hospitalities so lavishly
ex'emieu .
We are authorized to sav that
our esteemed exchange, the Ore
gonian, is assured that the authors
of the correspondence referred to
relative to the Omaha party's
recent visit to this city and men
'ion thereof in the Oregonian,
were actuated by no unkind feel
ings in penning the article re
ferred to, but that they were actu
ated solely in the belief t fiat justice
had not been fairly done our city
in the premises. The authors, we
are assured, are readers -l and
Irindlv disonsed tr.wa.d th Or.
gonian, and authorize us to say
that they trust that a kind and
neighborly feeling may continue
between the two cities to the end
that they may always stand
shoulder to shoulder in the further
ing of every interest that is calcu
lated to promote 'he mutual growth
of each, and of the whole state,
md that their belief is that tbe
Oregonian is more able to pr mote
-uch mutual growth and prosperity
than any other single agency in
the state.
Immigration Matters.
The healed summer period being
now about over immigrants from
the Eat and from California are
i gain seeking homes in Oregon's
mild climate. E. C. Masu-n, sec
retary of the Oregon Immigration
tiottrd, has returned from his visit
to California, and is again at his
det-k, answering the questions oi
the numerous tourists and settlers
who daily visit the rooms of the
rioard in search of information, or
to gaze thunderstruck at the mar
velous products of our glorious j
state. The number of Eastern
people coming to Oregon in seatch
of homes, as indicated by the
number repotting at the immigra
lion rooms is steadily increasing.
Tuesday Secretary Masten sent 38
irosective settlers on a tour up
the valley, every one of tnem be
ing of the most desirable class ol
citizens.
