their guidance, and to maintain
the discrepancy between the rela
tive values of the two metals, the
pui chases of the silver bullion un-.
der the law for the first month,
have been made at private prices,
this preventing the advance jn the.
value of silver to bring it into a
relative equality of value with
gold. There seems to be two ob
jects to be accomplished by the
gold men. . One being to keep the
market value of silver below par,
in order to maintain the supremacy
of gold, and failing in that to push
the market value of the bullion
away above par in order to effect
future legislation towards' main
taining the single gold standard.
In. the city of Brooklyn, New
York, a recent . decision court de
cision has been rendered that will
be of importance as a precedent.
Tha Tribune relates the iacts of
the case are that a little more than
a year ago two yopng women were
driving toward affospect Park in a
' cart, in that city, where they were
run into and their cart was ruined ;
by a heavy wagon. The mishap
appears to have been wholly a the
fault of the driver of the wagon,
for the young women drove their
vehicle as dote to the curbstone as
possible, and there was ' plenty' of
roeia for the wagon to pass. 'o
policeman wan in sight, as night
be expected, and when one arrived
he refused to do anything. With
some difficulty, the father of the
young woman who drove the cart j
discovered the author of the mis-
chief, whose employers voluntarily '
paid for the damage to the cart.
The father however, . was deter
mined, if possible, to bring the
driver to account, and sued him
for injuries done to his daughter.
A verdict of $250 was rendered,
and the driver, being unable to
pay has been consigned to jail.
A mother's protest against the
strictures upon Mrs. Cole, the
poor widow in' Portland who re
fused to part with her children
when propositions was made to
adopt them, were well made.
She earnestly defended the course
pursued by Mrs. Cole and said:
The love of.a true mother for her
children is unfathomable, and
nan ran iudire of its death bu
those who are mothers themselves.
This case is a sad one, and deserv
ing of patience and sympathy in
stead of censure. If women would
interest themselves individually,
in lending assistance to such u
fortunate loyal movers, instead of
sending flowers and expressions of
sympathy to criminals, it would
he more charitable anl com
mendable. .
We admit that many children
are nlaced in good homes and
l-.indjy .treated; but it is not
It.iuuible supposition that all of the
poor waifs are so fortunat-. We
cannot accord the benefactors of
the orphans and children of dis
solute and cruel parents enough
praise for their untiring efforts in
behalf of these ; they are noble
agents of mercy and iumii-e. But
jf a mother a true mother would
rather endure proverty, in prefer
ence to being . robbed of her
children, then none ought to gain,
say her; it is her privilege and
her right."
