Martin Gleason, a well-known
anu highly respected rancher of

to-day. His lace ami neck were

resting easy, although the shock
was such that his doctor is uneasy

Statistician.
Washington, August 18. The
statistician of the inter-state
commerca commission has com
pleted his second annual report,
which covers the transactions of
609 roads and shows the opera
tions of 153,35 miles of line. The
gross earnings for the year, exclu
sive of the rental of tracks, ynrds
and terminals, were $04,470,670.
After deductions are made for
fjxed charges, the final n t in
come for all roads in the United
States, was $101,388,76, or $661
per mile of l;ne. The total stocks
and bonds ' representing railway
propnv in the hands of the pub
lic is $7',366,72"),722.

T" A Brutal Prise Frht.
San Francisco, August 18. A
ten-round fight too place shortly
af er midnight at Red Jones' place
near the Fresno race track. The
contestants were C. Turner, a well
known colored middleweight of
Stockton, and Dan Eagan, known
as the Montana kid. Kagan was
a chopping block for Turner who
in the 7th round, knocked out four
of the kid's teeth witb a vicious
right hander. Eagan was not
able to come to time in the 10th
round.

Railroad Accident.
Ashland, Wis. August 18.-A wild
freight on the Wisconsin Central
collided with a stray flat car which
had beei. blown on to tne main
track, at Glidden, wrecking tne
engine and seven cars. Brakeman
J. VV. Emley was killed, Engineer
Lessard and fireman injured.
Appropriation BUI Passed.
Washington. August 18. The
senate to-dav passed the deficiency
appropriation bill, me committee
inserted an item- appropriating
12,000 for a steam vessel on Puget
Sound, to prevent the violation of
the Chinese restriction act and of
custom law; also an amendment
appropriating $1,233,688 for pay
ment of French spoliation claims.
The Clayton-Kreekenrldge Case.
Washington, August 18. Rep
resentative Marsh to-day pre
sented to the house the report of
the democratic minority committee
on elections in the case of Clayton
vs. .Breckenridge, of the second
Arkansas district. The report
says: With one exception the
district has always gone demo
cratic and the presumption should
be in favor l the democrat in
stead of the republican contestant.
The theft of the box in the case is
admitted, but it is held that it did
not change the result of the elec
tion, as the democrats carried the
hsit let by 149, even allowing the
republicans the disputed votes in
eve'y townsliip. The leport com
ments on the instructions of the
house to make a lull and thorough
nvestialion as this exceptional
case calls the attention to a great
number of charges and counter
charge and issues involved, and
slates that the louimittee spent
out twelve days in taking evidence.

St. Lolis,- August 18. Edwin
Hoke, shot and ki'led his wife this
morning while she was sleeping,
and then shot himself, inflicting
a mortal wound. A few weeks
ago he stole $4500 from his father,
but was arretted aud the money
recovered. Hoke, while being
taken to the hospital, said his
,'ather had made it a condition for
the withdrawal of the prosecution
against him for taking the money,
that he should apply for a divorce
trout Ins wife. This be consented
to and did enter suit, but later he
found that he loved - his wile so
much that he preferred to kill her
and himself rather than be sepa
rated Irom her.

matic corps, who called to ascer
tain his terms of peace. He re
sponded that his only terms were

One More Unfortunate Committed
to the Asylum.

Salkm, August 18. Thomas I.
James, a substantial old resident
of Hubbard, was adjudged insane
to-day and committed fo the asy
lum. His insanity runs to specu
lation and is also destructive, he
having threatened to destroy sev
eral buildings in Hubbard.
Fatal Railroad Accident.
Trinidad, Colo., August 18. A
telegram was received at noon
from Barela, 12 miles south of this
city, saying that a wreck had oc
cur? il and asking for a surgeon.
A special train was sent and all
the surgeons that could be ob
tained, to the scene of the acci
dent. Seven people were killed;
and fourteen wounded.
Crop Failure.
Quebec, August 18. Le Cana
dian appeals to the leaders of the
Ottawa and Quebec Governments,
to provide work for the inhabitants
of the counties below Quebec,
whose crops are a total failure.
Thousands of families are prepar
ing to leave the country.
Bridge Authorised.
Washington, August 18. In the
house to-day, on motion of Mor
rill, of Kansas, the senate bill was
passed, authorizing the construc
tion of a bridge across the Colum
bia river, by the Oregon Railway
Extension Company.

Union, Or., August 18. A one
hundred yard foot race near here
yesterday, bet ween E. G.Cameron,
of Portland, and Ben Wingard, of
Walla Walla, wbb won by Came
ron. Time, 10 seconds. The race
was for a purse of $2,000.
Trial for Murder.
San Francisco, August 18. The
trial of Frank Larue, for the mur
der of Henry McBride in a fight
at the Golden Gate club on June
9, was bt-gun before Judge Shaiter
and a jury to-day.

respondence between Vice-Presi
dent Webb, of the New York
Central, and Grand Master Work
man Powderly was made pnblic
to-night. Powderly in bis letter
says : "it l am correctly informed
ld and faithful employes of the
New York Central have been
summarily dismissed from the
service of the company because
they were active members of the
K.. of L. The men are willing to
ubmit the case to such arbitra
tion as will be reasonable; will
vou consent to do the same?"
To this letter from Powderly,
Webb replied as follows: "Re
plying, I have to say that no per
son discharged from this company
prior to August 8th, and referred
to in your communication, was
discharged because he was a mem
ber of your order, ibe immedi
ate superiors of each of said per
sona reported to the division super
intendent or superintendent oi
motive power, investigated each
case prior to their discharge, and
the facts of such discharge having
been reported to the management
they were further investigated and
the action oi the divicion superin
tendent or superintendent of mo
tive power was fully approved.
The management of this company
io not deem it consistent with its
continuance and prosperity in bus
iness and with the discharge of
ibe duty it owes to the people to
submit the propriety in the action
n the discharge of any of
its employees to arbitration.
I have read your communication
with care, and I think the forego

Washmtoton. August 18. Rep
resentative-Carter, of Montana, to
day reported to the house, from
the committed on mines and min
ing, a bill to pi-ovide, from exam
ination and claftsincation, certain
mineral lands. It authorizes the
secretary of the interior to
speedily cause all lands in Mon
tana and Idaho, within the land
grant and indemnity land grant
limits of the Northern Pacific
railroad company, to be examined
and classified by competent per
sons, with special reference to tlie
mineral and non-miceral charac
ter, and to reject, cancel and' dis
allow any and all cli ims, and the
filing heretofore "made or which
may hereafter be made on lani in
those states classified as mineral ,
land. The word mineral shall not
be held to include iron or coal.
