TnK opinion among the leading
men of Europe and this country
li m to be that a general war in
tv.rope mnst prevail before alwo
lute peace can reign. IWhaps
Bm h may be the case, hut to the
ce'oljserver of the tendency of
the times, the prospect f any
extensive or general war is pa1
and gone, and humanity is all the
better for it.
As an outgrowth of the persist
ut agitation of the subject, am:
the unwavering work in its favor
the woman question is receivin
the active and able support of
many of the a(e. Eventually a
perfect equality upon all q;iestiotm
will be accorded to individuals ir
respective of sex. In the matter
of education that -end is nearly ac
complished already. It is said
that Mr. Gladstone is preparing to
make a move in the direction oi
equal education of the highest
kind for men and women. He
contributed nothing to the
women's part in the first epoc'.i oi
the struggle. They have worked
out their own salvation, not only
without distinguished allies of any
partv, but despite the frowns and
discouragement of the narrow or
the timid in all parties. They
have forced open the doors of
some medical schools, and Oxford
Maimii them to examination
for the medical decree for the first
time nex.t year The have con
quered by sheer force of merit,
talctit and resolution every inch
of their way, and at last the most
powerful speaker and debater of
his country is preparing to de
mand for theiu an equity in tne
public appropriations made for
university support. What form
the effect of his advocacy will take
remains to be ascertained, tie
may ak that the women's col
leges, Girton and New ham, be al
lowed an annual gift ; or he may
seek to compel Cambridge and Ox
ford to admit women students on
the same term as men and confer
' upon.them' not only degrees but
the material rewards and posts of
piofit now exclusively claimed by
men. His assumption of women's
- rights in education and industry
is the most significant fact in the
history of the woman movement;
and ai is only candid to ;ay that
they have compel If d by their ow n
success this emphatic recognition
of the right and inherent justice
of their claims.
The malicious gossip about the
l&dies of the White house that has
been so industriously published,
has not been atoned lor by the
apology of the Chicago Herald.
The retraction made by it places
thpt paper beyond reproach, we
suppose, but published matter in a
newspaper is like sowing thistle
seed. Once it is scattered by no
possibility can it be gathered up
again, but it goes whither it is
drifted without a chance to hinder.
Consequences can only be watched
with a full understanding that
they are inevitable, and can only
be pal ia ted as they have been in
this case.
In Ochoco apples are eaid to be
as lew as 4 cents per pound. The
millionaires of that locality can
probably indulge in a few just to
see how they taste. Two dollars
and forty cents per bushel and
only a short distance from the
Willamette Valley orchards.
Hurry up the Oregon Pacific rail
road so that inhabitants of that
section can have apples to eat and
farmers of this section a market
for their fruit.

The Brazilian constitution con
tains a clause prohibiting the re
public from engaging, either alone
or in concert with otiier powers, in
any war nf conquest. This is a
level of national morality which
no other power in Christendom
has reached. The incorporation
of this principle in the tonstitu-
tion is undoubtedly to be at
tributed to the influence of the
arbitration debates of the l'an
