Daily trains are now running
to Green Basin.where an.Alhanv
ilempany has started a saw mill.
The timher along the north fork
of the Santiam is the finest in
Oregon, and some haf dozen saw
mills are already Cutting it into
lumber which finds its way to
market over ttie Oregon Pacific
road. The lamest of these mills
is that of the Santiam Lumbering
Company Co. at Mill City, which
cuts about 40,000 feet per day and
emplovs 35 hands. In connection
with the mill it a shingle and lath
mill.
Trout fishing up the north San
tiam now is not verv good, xcept
in some of the smaller tributaries,
where the festive trout an- to be
found in great numbers. This
fork of the antiam at this season
of the year has a milky appearance
owing to the location of chalk
banks far up the river, which, be
coming dry, crumble and fall into
the river. This drives the trout
up the small t ibutaries). Several
dams built serosa the river tor
saw mill purposes also prevent
the fish from going up the stream.
The state fish commissioners have
inspected these and will doubtless
make some needed recommenda
tions to prevent the saino.
A I 'lnoiih resort for the knight
of the rod is at Blowout Lake
a'out 15 miles alve Gatesville on
the Linn county side. Here a
lake about half a mile long has
been formed, some say by a vol
canic explosion ir 187H, hut the
formation of the lake shows that ii
vas caused by an immense land
slide by which a great mountain
slid into the stream, creating a
beautifu. lake.

hot spring- owned by Albany
parties, which promise to be
come, with the extension of 'he
railroad, a famous health resoit.

region.
The track on the railroad is laid
about three n i:es ahove (Joe, a
distance of about 00 miles east of
Albany. Above this the traveller
goes over the old Minto Pa-s trail
ln-h ib the way the pioneers
used to eo over into Eastern Ore
gon, but it is tnvelled very little
now. The gr .dinsr done at differ
ent times by the different contrac
tors on 'he road is well preserved
and l.iit for a few wa-homsis ready
for the rails for a long distance.
Four in'lt s of track is laid at the

fori o of men the road could now
be completed to thf summit before
the rains of winter fall.
There are large bodies of fine
bottom land along the Upper
Sautiam, which Mre unsurveyed,
and which are only waiting for a
s. nail outlay oy the government to
survey them, when thev will be
settled Uj. These aie held in
some places now under the
squatter right law. These lands
ought to tie surveyed.
The mountains on the Upper
Santiam are very rugged and the
si reams that flow down the moun
tain gorges into the river form
many beautiful falls, making the
scenery most attraotive. When
the Or -gon Pacific road is ex
tended through these mountains
'his region is likely to beome one
of the most popular mountain
resorts in Oregon.
