No arrets have yet been made
of the participants "in the shooting
affray a' Lebanon Tuesday even
ing. A warrant was issued for
Banta's arrest on the evening of
the shooting, but the officer d d
not attempt to arrest him until
the fol'owing morning, when he
was found to be conveniently ab
sent. Sheriff Scott, of this city,
went out yesterday nurning to
search for Banta, but late last
night he had not been caught.
There is a conflict in the report
as to whether Banta or his father-in-law,
Williams, shot Mr at.
S. H. Walpole, a young man
who was with Banta, was in this
city yesterday, and said that he
had been runout of Lebanon since
the shooting, because, according
to his story, he would appear as a
witness for Banta. He said that
he was warned to leave town, and
barely escaped with his life by
leaping from a window at the hot'd
atera mob had broken into the
room. He ha th reputation of
being a tin-horn gambler and
was very much afraid be
would have to go back
to Lebanon and kill Bomebody.
He annealed to the district attor
ney for warrants to arrest certain
persons at Le anon. but this was
not granted. He then wanted a
long article in his defense pub
lished in the Hkrald. He said
that unless protected he would bj
forced to go back to Lebanon
armed and ready to kill three or
four men.
All this fuss seems to have been
made over the simple fact that
Banta and his wife had separa'ed,
and that the husband had tried to
see her against her will at the
home of her parents, and a shoot
ing affrav followed, in which Banta
was slightly wounded in the hand

Samples of the new wheat crop
are being received by shippers in
Portland. Tbe wheat from the
Willamette valley is magnificient
never better and tbe crop is
turning out beyond all expecta
tions. It will not be going too far
to say that the wheat crjp of the
Willamette valley this season will
be the best and largest ever har
vested in that garden spot of the
Pacific Coast. Samples from tbe
EasternOregon crop are very satis
factory, being far superior to the
crop of last year, but, in some in
stances, not so good as the crop of
the year before. There have not

from the Inland Empire to enahU
a judgment of the whole crop to
be formed. Oregnnian.
