The Famous Battle Field Savanty
Tear Aflor.
The vulgarization of Waterloo
was summed up by tha Duke of
Wellington in a single sentence
when tie gazed for an instant on
the ugly mound surmounted by a
still nure hideous lion, and ex
claimed pathetically: "They have
spoiled my battle field!" The
French'soldiers.on their wavto Ant
werp a few years Inter, says the
London World, damaged the ag
gressive lail of the latter, and Tt
needed all the firmness of Leopold
1 to prevent them from destroying
the monu:nent altogether before
they li ft him to the undisturbed
enjoyment of his new dominions.
i ce then at least half a million
British traveller have climbed up
the two hundrtd and odd steps
leading to the "Lion of Waterloo,"

The census returns for Oregon
will show a population of onlv
280,000, while Washington will
have about 335,0i0. There must
be something radically wrong, es
pecially when we co'nsider that
Oregon cast nearly one-third more
votes at the recent election tuan
did our sister state. The work has
not been well done, and the result
is Oregon will have to suffer, for
there is no likelihood that the
official returns will entitle us to
another representative in congress
