WAGE WORK ICRS IN AMERICA.
I.n the current number of the
Westminster Review an Englinh-v-nman,
who ban mipportetl her
v f and three chiMren in the
ted States by her own labors,
thaws a very interesting and in
structive contrast between the
condition nf waje workers in Enj
land and in America. sh does
not dwell very mut-b npon the
difference in the rate of wages in
tiie twu countries nor upon the
relative cost of living, tor one, nlie
thinks, nearly offsets the other,
but she makes the point with great
clearness that the American work
ininan or woman ia infinitely
belter orf" than the Kngltnh because
this country affords avenues of ad
vancement aud progress which are
closed and barred to wage workers
in England.
The author re-enforces her posi
tion with numerous instances and
illustrations which it is not neces- j
sary to cite, since they can be seen !
all around as by any one who will
take pains to observe. We have
in the United States none of those
guilds or crafts which are so
common in every country in E -rope.
The blacksmith's son need
not be a blacksmith any wore than
the banker's sun need he a banker.
The country is so great and pro
' gressive that if the square pegs get
jammed into the round holes ir is
the exception rather than the
rule.
( ur wage workers are too apt to
overlook the advantages of their
own condition in this respect
While everv intelligent man wants
to see his children do better in
every way than he has done, many
of those who work for wages fail to
appreciate the honnrfles" freedom
of choice of occupation which this
country aff'rd to young men. If,
perchance, a son make a mistake
in beginning his active life, the
father is too apt to charge it to
eveay cause but the right one, and
to blame a system for that which
is clearly the fault of the individ
ual. There must always be, in all
countries, hewers of wood and
drawers of water, but it does not
follow that Milch employ mentmn(-t
be, or even shou.d be, hereditary
for generations, as is the case in
Europe. We have in this country
no dynasties of particular kinds of
labor, no law of primogeniture in
wage earning. In practice, as in
theory, every man in this country
may be the architect of his own
fortunes, and it is iu this, as well
as in our representative form of
government, that our superiority
to the rest of the world consists.
Another neat device of Chinese
for entering the country has been
exposed at Spokane Falls. Their
coolies enter Victoria, pay the head
tax and then travel on theCanudian
Pacific to a point opposite the
Colville Indian agency. They
then quietly sneak across the
border and become squaw men.
After a short htay on the reserva
tion they probably yield their
places to others and drift down to
the sound cities or to this State.
The resources of Chinese ingenuity
in ituu!gling appear to be endless
as no sooner is one loophole
patched up than another is dis
covered. The tramp, in Racine Wis., who
as-taulted and severely beat a
Catholic priest, and who was
taken by the crowd that gathered
with a rope around his neck to
bang, aud only esc.tped by the
timely interference of the olice,
can thank his stars that he baely
escaped a well merited punish
ment. "Mb. Bi.Ar.SK," says "The Lon
don Chronicle." "proves himself
an abler man in controversy than
Lord Salisbury, although having a
worse case to defend. The repre
sentatives of England seem mer
babies in the hands of Mr. Blaine."
tii K. Kotiinnn Treaty vu
nuru " " j
Biade, the German presa made x
marks precisely similar to these.
The Bismarcks, they said, with the
better end of the case, had got the
worse end of the bargain. These
are the views that Americans read
in the foreign newspapers as to
their distinguished secretary
They only discover how feeble and
ineffectual he is when they look at
him through the wise spectacles of
an American Mugwump.
Grkemebacm, the young gentle
man who was lost in the Olympic
mountains, and wandered four
days without food excepting wild
blackberries, had a very narrow
escape, lie wandered away from
camp after a deer be had wounded
and in the excitement of the
chase did not tealize how far he
was travelling. Under ttte excite
ment of a hunters lever one is not
aware of the amount of exertion
he puts forth. .
The application for pensions
uuder tiie new law have already
reached 280,000. aud their are still
some to be thought of. Many are
alarmed at the large number, but
several years ago they were not
tiiarinea wnen tiie same men re
Hponded to th several calls for
"300,000," more.
Os September a California will

Thkrk cannot but be prosperous
times in Oregon this fall. The
wheat crop is bountiful aud prices
will be good, while a good yield
and fair prices are promised for
iruit, hope and all other crops.
