of the ialein Board of Trade this
evening, resolutions were adopted
and ordered Bent by telegraph and
mail to Oiegon's senators and rep
resentatives at Washington, urging
them 10 take steps to secure a re
count of the census of tlie state,
and declaring the former census
imperfect and faulty. It was also
decided to use what influence
they could in having the county
improve and the city of Salem
sprinkle the roidu leading from
Salem to the State Fair giounds,
so as to give better accommodation
tj the public at the fall festival.

-A Young Lady Injured.
Salem, August 4. Early this
morning the residence ot Mrs. M.
L. Sweeley, in North Stletu, took

goods. The loss was about $400 ;
no insurance. Mrs Sweeley is a
wid -w and it will be a severe blow
to her.
This morning returning from
the Wilhoit springs Miss Amfieli
Cavanaugh was seriously injured
by bsing thrown from a wagon on
her head. The wagon struck a

John Roaa Now oa Trial - A Change
of Venue Denied.
Oysterville, Wd., Aug. 4. The
defense in the cse of John Rose
was argued on a motion for a
chango of venue this moraine.
The grounds on which the change
was asked, were: 1st, Prejudice
and ill feelings against the defend
ant; 2d, That on account f the
conviction of one of tho-? charged
with the crime the feeling against
the prisoners would be inien-iiied
and an impartial jury could not
he obtained; 3d, Tbat a majoiity
of the jurors had been suhpoenaed
by the sheriff in open view from
the neighborhood of South Ben I
and YV'illapa, where 0en threats
ol lynching had bt-en made.
In de. lying the motion Judge
Bloom fie lii called attention to the
tact th-tt no difficulty had been ex
perienced in ge ting a jury in the
E I Aar Is' cas., that but 0 jurors
tiad been examined, and only four
premptory challenges had been
made, the remaining 12 being
challenged for cause. The court
ordered a certified list of jurors
troni which the jury to try John
Row was to be selected, to be
servd on the conns-d for the de
fense. When the hat was served
it was claimed bv the defense that
out of 99 jurors placed in the box
46 were summoned from S uth
Bend, Willapa City, and Willapa
V'rtllev. The defense filed this
fact in an affidavit and atain re
newed the motion fot a change of
venue. The state was given until
7 p. m. to file counter affidavits.
The court expressed itself in some
what severe terms ab-ut the othtvr
summoning jurors from localities
where the defendants reside!.
One of the jurors in the Kd-
wards case says the first ballot was
me for conviction and three lor
acquittal. After an hour auotner
banot showed 11 for conviction
