EDITORIAL NOTES.
A thrill of eympatby cannot
help being felt for the 17 year old
boy in St. Louis who defended bis
mother, at the rifle, of his life,
against the brutalities of a drunken
step father, l'he plea of self
defense should in all reason pro
tect that boy from the persecution
of a legal trial.
The experience of Mr. Griffith
the Fresno, California, gentleman,
whose brother was killed by the
cable cars in San Francisco, and
who in endeavoring to expedite
matters in getting the remains of
his brother prepared and for
warded to his home for burial,
ran upon the demand from the
coroner's office for a great big
bribe, is probably not out of the
ordinary in that city under like
circumstances, but it certainly
shows a state of affairs that should
be corrected by all means.
The Nebraska independent
have put out a full ticket and
'platform of multitudinous plankt
including the eight hour business,
government ownership of tele
graphs and railroads and financial
problems. All very good but
probably not sufficient to attract
from the old parties, each of wbich
have probably enunciated similar
planks in platforms at various
times. Parlies may be born on
momentous occasions but they
do not seem to grow in the inde
pendent mold wortn a cent.
The lover of the romatic will
find food for their imaginations,
in the story of an English Lord
by the name Boyle, who passe !
several years in Canada and in
this country as a farmer and stock
raiser, without claiming any
special favors on account of his
blue blood, and without his family
knowing where he was. An ad
vertisement for him to come home
and assume the duties of hit. in
herited stations finally found him,
by his accidentally picki:,g up an
old paper and seeing it. The
wonder of the thing is not in the
fact that the man remained so
long unknown while relatives were
seeking in every conceiveable
manner, but that a man of average
intelligence and education should
pass so many years without writ-
ing or receiving letters and with
out reading the newspapers.
The dispatches recently noted
the death of Colonel John A.
Bridgeland, of Indiana, and in
reminscences of his life the follow
ing story has come to light, show
ing some of the episodes of public
life : A gentleman who knew Mr.
Bridgeland well relates that on
the occasion he had threatened to
horsewhip Senator, now President
Harrison. It was during the
Arthur Administration, when
Harrison prevented Bridgeland's
appointment as Consul to Barce
lona. Friends prevented Colonel
Bridgeland from carrying bis
threat into execution. Soon after
Harrison's inauguration Bridge
land presented him with a team
of horses in the name of the Indi
ana republicans.
The advocates of vivisection in
this country among the medical
fraternity are growing less as the
true knowledge of the results of
such practice became known. The
fact really are that no practical
amount of scientific knowledge
has yet accrued, that is available
for the amelioration of human suf
fering fro n the use of vivisection.
" It is said that in the exerimente
: of Mantegzza, he invented an in
' strufnent for tnflietinir UDon
'starved animals exquisite pain by
crushing parts of the body which
have been previously inflamed to
the highest pitch through piercing
' with nails. He spent a year in
.watching, measuring and record
ing the physical agony of rabbits
and jKuinea-pigs, without ever hav
ing the idea that any useful re
sult would follow in the discovery
of practical means of alleviating
human suffering. Barbarity of
that . merciless and atrocious
nature must have dulled and al
most eradicated the investigator's
sensibility. A heart that coald
find pleasure in such brutal
scientific sport must have grown
cold and callous toward human
suffering. In the same way
Majendie; after profound .re
searches in vivisection, became so
infatuated with scientific .zeal
that in operating for cataract he
he could not resist the impulse to
plunge the needle to the bottonv
of a human eye in order to observe
the effect of irritation npon the
nerves. Wanton cruelty begun
with animals naturally ends with'
men. Vivisection creates a mor
bid craving for crude experiments
with the highest order of animals.
It is barely' possible that the
stories of wonderful fertility and
desirability of the Oklahoma and
other lands, has had about as
much to do-with the abandonment
of the New England farms, about
which so much has been saioV in
inducing the migrati n of lohabi
tants, as baa any other cause. It
is now said that the Swedes who
have been colonized on some of the
abandoned farms in Vermont, are
contented and happy, and that
the official inspection of the gov
ernment not only led to that con
clusion but also induced several
leading men to personally invest
in said lands themselves. ' Very
often home advantages are over
looked iu searching for wonderful
things at a distance. As com
pared with their own conn try
these Swedes find the rigors of
the Vermont ' climate highly ac
ceptable.
