EDITORIAL NOTES.
8bnatok Mitchell haa received
an Increase of service on the mail
root between Salem and Argento
from three to six times per week
Ubhebal Clarkson, assistant
postmaster general, it is said still
persists in his intention to reitro,
and has so informed President
Harrison.
The waste of time in the lower
house of congress in calling the
roll add voting, is to be obviated
by the use of some patent device
to facilitate the voting with more
rapidity. It is evident to any one
who has witnessed a roll call and
vote in any legislative body, ' that
too much time is taken up, es
pecially in as large a body as the
house bf representatives. Some
device by which members could
touch aa electric button and ' sim
ultaneously register their votes in
plain sight of all ought to prove
practicable. It would be an enor
mous saving of time and money
every year. -
The death of Logue the Indian
Territory outlaw, who was a des
perado of , the' most pronounced
type, but was finally brought down
with a bullet through his breast
from the pistol of a deputy ' mar
shal, was finished up in, true
romantic and dramatic style. It is
aid that be rose as the officer ap
proached his apparently lifeless
body, and remarked as he drew a
bead on the marshal with his
pistol': "I'll learn you to be a
xuore careful how you approach a
gentleman to shake hands."
When he bad put a bullet through
the marshal's arm he fell back
dead. In the hands of an able
romancer here's the plot of a
thrilling short story ol border life,
with a climax which has the true
western flavor.

state is once admitted it is there
for better or for worse. It is un
fnrtnnjite that Nevada hp an
turned out better. The State has
a population if less than 60,000.
The census will probably show less
population now than in 1880. At
the last election, after an exciting
campaign, there were only 12,000
votes. And yet Nevada with 46,
000 people, has two United States
Senators just at many as Iowa or
New York ! Very true, but it is
too late to change the arrange
ment, now. The State is in the
Union, and it is there to stay.
The only hope is that it may im
prove its condition, and make a
better showing in the future. Sen -

No more greedy money loaning
people can be found than
the English, nor no more ' enter
prising people to ccent nut and
appropriate new fields for invest
ments of gold. They occupy every
section of the globe in which capi
tal .can be availably located. It i"
said to shore up their investments
in Sooth America that the English
creditors have come to the rescue
of the Argentine government. By
the' negotiation of a large tem
porary loan the treasury is relieved
from its embarrassments and de
livered from tne fear of approach
ing insolvency. With the financ
ial troubles averted for a season,
.the political crisis is at an end.
The bondholders had reached a
point where an extension of credit
was absolutely needed in order to
secure the immense interests
which they have at stake in the
Argentine.

Tirk results of the advance in
the' silver bullion market has
beed a surprise, not only to the
advocates of silver but to its op
ponents an overwhelming aston
ishment. Even those that favored
the silver ill expected an advance
in the price of bullion and that
there would be an inflow ffom the
English houses to this country,
but it was not expected that the
passageof the silver bill in our
congress would cause silver to
vance in the English market to
sui-h an extent as to invite ship
ments of bullion from this country
to England. Yet that is the fact
of the case and the result is as
suredly going to establish the
truth of the claim that free coinage
will be of benefit to the whole
country.
There has been some loose talk
about depriving Nevada of State
hood or. account of its (Kxir show
ing' in population, .Some people
teem to think that congress can
reduce it to the ranks that is, to
tha terntories but it can not.
