The Eugene Guar I says bv the

are enabled to give the population
of some of the principal towns of
Western Oregon. In making their
returns from a number of the towns
the eiiumeiators did not separate
the inhabitants of the towns from
the precinct of which they are a

I this was not done so that an ac :ur

Sr Paul, Minn., July, 7.
Weieached the city to--day ten
hours late, having been detained
in Dakota by the great s'oini of
this morning. Sunday afternoon,
traveling eastward through
Dakota, we observed a very heavy
and dark cloud risinjr in the north.
This cloud kept riming above the
horizon, and it was seeti from the
train, as a light breze sprang up,
that this cloud hadtlieappeaiance
of a hurrcane. At 2 :30 o'clock
this morning we pafst-d into the
storm. It sceoied mo're of a toi
nado than of a cvclone nature. It
was accompanied with a terrible
wind and a terrific electrical dis
play.
Our engineer, beine verv Drn-
dentK ran under cover of some
heavy warehouses, situated in a
small village alongside the track,
and this piobably the only thing
that saved the " rain from being
overturned. s it was, the pas
sengers all felt quite certain that
we would be thrown Irotn the
train before we reached the shelter
of theBe houses.
We remained here until morn
ing, and carefully telt our way for
ward to Fargo, some twenty Wiles
distant, where we fount! thai one
train with twelve sleepers on the
North R. K. had been thrown from
tue track bv the force of the wind.
As we passed ea.-tward toward -t.
Paul, we fo;ui-l destruction and
wreckage on ry hand, showing
that the lot utio had been veiy
a decided tendency to-ward co-edu- J
cation existing among pnvat
1 institutions of learning. II should
, bo noted here that some of onr
; prominent educators ubo advocate
c education admit that they do
I n t practice what they preach". In
1 this they display a lack of confid
ence 111 the correctness of their
on n theories by refusing to send
their sous and doughtcrs to mixed
schools.
In our public schools there must
be no que-tion aboiv the duty of
giai.iiut. coital opportunities to
both sexes. In their discussions,
however, the members of the
Council arrived at some conclu
sions: First, That girls are as
capa'de of receiving as high edu
cation as the boys, and they are
entitled to an equal chance.
Second, As to the departments
01 higher education, their conclu
sions were not to cert.iin. It
would feem, however, that in our
advanced institutions of learning
the bounds of propriety have been
over-stepped in t:ie promiscuous
education oi ti e .-exi s. 1 h-? argu

by the ad c .tes of coeducation,
there still remains the question as
to the lack 01 rcstrainii g .ntluence

We found the hotels crowded.
Everv hotel register in the city
bears the naun s of a proportion .f
the teachers and membeis of the
National Council, and those of ihe
Educational Association, who have
already arrived. No correct esti
mate can be formed to day, how
ever, from the hotel registers
alone. Very many of the lady
teachers prefer a piivate hoaid.ng
house and home coinfurU to li.use
of a public hpicl. All of the-e are
rrovided fur as they arrive, and at
ast seven or ight thousand of
the entire number of visitors are
entertained at private houses in
both cities.
Mestof the southern delegates
have already arrived, and coming
just as the spell of hot weather
has reached its end. Ihey are
loud iu their expressions that the
north is al ways cold ; and as re
marked by one South Carolina
lady. "If it is like this in mid
summer, what must it lie iu mid
winter?" The citizens ol St. Paui and Min
neapolis are making veiy etloit to
entertain their guests. It is esti
mated thai there will Hut in- less
than twelve thousand teachers in
attendance during the week ; and
including those who have taken
advantage of the cheap rates to
visit the city, there will probably
be not lesH than twenty to twenty
five thousand visitors in the city
