saved.
A few minuter before 7 o'clock

to work. About titty men and
voting women had reached the
operating r-iom, when a messenger
hoy saw a pun ot smoke under a
table in the dis'rihuting ro ru.
He sc-rcely had time to investi
gate the cau-e efore the wooden
'a We was in flames and the hre
was spreading with lightning
rapidity. He rushed up stairs to
notify the ntw arrivals that the
bui'ding was on fire. Th- y were
compelled to go through the dis
tributing room t get down stai's,
and a panic was the result.
Women so earned ad men rushed
pell mell down -taiis to escape the
flames, which in less than two
minutes had spread almost over
the entire distributing room, burn
ing up wires, instrument, and
tables a if they were so much
tinder. Th entire room when
the panic-stricken crowd passed
through it was fi'led with dense,
siifling smoke. They fell over
each other in their wild efforts to
rexch a place of safety.
In the restaurant on ttie next
floor were four men and three
women, cooks ai.d waiteis in the
restaurant, who bad been forgot
n in the excitement. All mean'

The flames were shoo ing out of
the front windows, and volumes
of smoke puffed . heavenward
When the great crowds in the
streets saw the men and women
ru-h out on the roof a cry of
orror went up, for it did not
seem possible that they could be
rescued. The women -creamed
and wrung their bands, and the
men yelled, "For God's sake do
something to save!" A long lad
der was placed ug.iinst the rear of
the burning building. It did not
reach within fiity feet of the roof.
