EDITORIAL NOTES.
The A. O. U. W. Grand Lodge is
in session at Astoria.
Idaho counts number 44 in the
galaxy of states in the American
union.
The new postmaster of Aetoria,
on taking possession of the office
recently, fonnd things in so un
satisfactory a situation that lan
guage failed him to describe it and
he invoked the aid of a photog
rapher and had the interior
photographed, and made the
picture pari of his report to the
department, in asking for repairs
and alterations.
Thk Newfoundland colony is
openly defiant of the authority of
Great Britian, and the Canadas
are resters nnder the prospects of
the passage of the McKinley tariff
bill by our Congress, and likely
thereby to be asking to become
one of us. Altogether it does not
look bright for the continued
authority of Grer.t Britian on thi
continent.
Thk surveys of the Umatilla
Indian Survey have at last been
made and accepted by the govern
ment, and it now only remains
for the Indians to select tL jir lands
in severalty and the reservation
business will be finally nought to
a satisfactory issue and t!. j balance
of the land placed on Lb. market.
The people of the country are
anxiously looking to Congress for
a eolation of the silver question,
bat still it fails to come. The
matter has been discussed in Con
gress until it is thoroughly under
stood, both there and by the
people that the fullest extent to
which it can be carried at present
is embodied in the latest amended
bill, and now Congress should act
npon that bill and give the country
some rest on the Eilver question.
The truth of the statement
probably cannot he denied that the
census of 1890 will show an enor
mous increase in the population of
the 8outh, and the election returns
of 1892 will show an enormous de
crease in the vote. These two
facta illustrate the beautiful work
ings in the South of the system of
basing representation on popula
tion, but the point is being so
abarply accented that the people
are beginning to see it and will
soon demand a reform.
Considerable discussion has
been going on in the papers be
tween different parties, in relation
to the coddling inotr , some affirm
ing that it was not present in the
orchards of the Willamette Valley
this year, while others are equally
as certain that it was not only
present but would get in its
destructive work as it did last
year. The conclusion now seems
to be settled that the latter men
were correct and that uusprayed
orchards will have wormy apples.
If the fruit is saved spraying must
be unremittingly applied through
out the season.
It is strange that any person, st
this day and aze of the world can
enter a p'ea for the brutality of the
prize ring and the inhumanity of
the sluggers trade, to advocate
that thre is anything commend
able and deserving in the act of
pounding and battering a fellow
beings physical anatomy and in
flicting wounds and contusions and
spilling human gore. But it
seems tbat such individuals do
exist, as the Chronicle records the
argument of a correspondent, and
winds up with the well put state
ment in this modern time fighting
with the fists is an anachonism.
The invention of gunpowder has
bees aa fatal to the chivalry of the
"inf. if it ever existed, as to the
chivalry of the battlefield. Nor is
the argument tenable that a more
extended cultivation of the use of
a stan'i natural weapons weul4
ten J 'o do away with the ue of
artificial weapons. As well ask a
military nation like France or Ger-
many to throw away arms of pre .

the lowest and most degraded

having no single ennobling or
elevating sentiment connected
with it.
The vice-president, of the United
states and the lieutenant governor
of several of Ihe states, are ofllcers
that carry considerable honor with
them bnt very little of anything
else. Jmt at present a Mr. Jones,
who happened to be elected lieu
