tXPANSION IN BUSINESS.
It is a noticeable fact that busi
ness in a general sense, is rapidly
, growing. One sign of this can be
seen in the increasing travel upon
the trains of the Southern Pacific
line, which forma the present
through line for this locality. Im
mense trains are being run, and
still they are crowded.
But the travel is not the only
test, it in reality forms but a
small one. Eastern exchanges
talk of the expansion of business
and say that however vaiious lines
of trade may be affected by local
influences, there can be no doubt
of the great activity in; general
business, and the growing expan
sion of the volume of transactions.
The bank exchanges demonstrate
this fact in an unmistakable way,
for daring the past month there
has been an increase in the bank
clearings of 21 per cent., w hile
excluding the part which the
active speculation on the New
York Stock Exchange has played
the improvement is nearly 19 per
cent. In any review of the busi
ness of the country, however, there
is no occasion to leave out the
transactions on the stock exchanges
as they represent great interests,
and naturally have an ii iportant
effect upon the general business of
the country. The tota' increase
in the clearings at New York alone
daring May was 7"S,000,000,
while in Boston the increase came
hard on to f 100,000,000, or $307,
201,989, against $408,804,782 for
Hay, 1889. The activity here still
continues, the gross clearings for
the first week in June amounting
to $126,611,084, a larger amount
than has ever before passed
through the clearing-house in one
week, and an increase over the
corresponding week last year of
nearly 84 percent. The con tin
nous improvement in railroad
earnings also adds to the weight
of testimony in fa or of the steady
growth in prosperity of the busi
ness of the country. The valuable
tables of the New York Financial
Chronicle set this forth in a clear
light. For the third week of May
87 roads show an increase in gross
earnings of no less than 16.03 per
cent, over the same week last year.
For the fourth week 44 roads show
a gain of 11.32 per cent., with in
dications that the ratio of gain will
be still larger when reports are
received from the other roads. It
is an important fact also that the
gains this year are made over a
large increase last year. For the
whole month of May it is estimated
from the returns already received
that there will be an increase oi
nearly 11 per cent, on 81 roada.
The general railroad situation
seems to be taking on a 11 wire kind
ly aspect, largely, perhaps, as a
result of the "getting together" of
separate, and in many cases con
flicting, railroad interests. There
is a genrral feeling of confidence
in trade circles, based upon the
more encouraging outlook for the
cross and the genrral industrial
prosperity. But the better crop
outlook has discouraged somewhat
the speculation in grain, with the
result of lower prices for wheat.
In general trade, too, it is not the
season for much activity in mer
chandise, and the demand is
restricted largely to the supply ol
immediate requirements. The
Boston Advertiser says that cotton
fabrics are still firm, with an ad
vancing tendency, in sympathy
with the high cost of raw cotton.
Wool is firui and Btocka 0:1 hand
are well reduced, but trade is
quiet. Country prices for tlit new
din are firmly held. The English
market is fim for wools suitable!
far this country. Hides are very
firm, but trade is quiet. Leather
also holds up under the firmnef-s ;
of bides, and there is a fair demand
for all grades. English buyers are I
reported in the market buying I
splits. Boot" and shoes are steady j
and tli manufacturers are all busy, j
India-rubber is active ami tirrnantl
offerings are well taken. Iron
quiet, but with no improvement
here, although a better feeling is
noted in Pennsylvania and the
South, where new orders are be
ginning to come in. Copper is !
active and strong. Coal is
Steady '
