Gunning For a Lover.
If tho father of a daughter of
inarriageble age who lives near
lir.'u' i liail Weii a better marks
man, says the Salem Stateman,
thero wo'i'd to-dav have been
mourning in a couple of households
in that quiet little city. The young
lady i.ad a sweetheart, who whs.
to the father, an offensive partisan
and the old gentleman, so the story
goes, had several times forbidden
him the freedom of his home ami
admonished him to cease paying
attentions to his winsome daughter.
But love, 'tis said. knows no bounds
nor countenances rebuffs, and con
sequently Sunday - nurhti'ali found
the young Romeo scaling.as it were
the runL'S of the ladder leading to
h'- domicile of his Juliet. But the
iii'ght-have-been father-in-law wasi
not the one to hit idly by and thus
see his stem mandates disobeyed.
He had b!o d in.hi-eye, vengeance
in his heart and a gun in his hand.
The young man was so informed
t-y tlie watchful paternal ancestorj
and requested lo vamose skip
skeedaddle. He studied not on
the order to go, but went at once,
not liking to linger longer, and
deeming a hasty retreat through
the garden the better part of valor.
As he disappeared among the
gooseberry bushes and over the
back fence the old gentleman took
a shot at him another, and
another. But the young man fled
unharmed by the leaden missies
and thus the storv ends.
nooil Kind and Trail.
The Salem Journal says Countv
Judge Shaw and Commissioner
Onm went up the Santiai i the
latter part of the week to investi
gate the work .done in replacing
and reopening the Minto trail, and
were pleased to find the work done
much better than expected. There
is a wagon road to Stewart's about
two and one-half miles above IVn
Smith's (UatesvilleJ and from
Stewart's east as far as Britonbush
creek, some 25 miles, there is now
an excellent trail,- but no wago
road, as the uninformed would
have you believe. The O. P. Mil
road company has made a goxl
trail wherever their track spoiled
the old one and Don Smith has
done excellent work in clearing
the intermediate places.
