"tmx battle oh the free coinage of
eUrex is' still being waged in Con
gress, with a growing strength on
tbe side of tbe people, which is
tbe' free coinage side of the
question. An eastern exchange
aa-a that only a few days before
bis death Abraham Lincoln said :
"X believe God bas stored up in
eur western mountains gold and
silver enough to pay the entire
national debt, and that we have
seen plucky enough to dig it out."
By demonetizing silver tbe agents

took from silver this power, and

Tbe most leading papers of the
cenatry have spoken, in no un
certain 'term, in relation to the
supreme court's . recent decision
poo toe original package liquor
aaatter. : The New York Tribune
ays : " After considerable beat
ing about the bush, the Senate
yesterday paseed a bill which re
stores to the States the power to
1 with liquor in original pack-
At least, if it does not
"restore" a power which the Su
preme Court lately declared to
bare ne existence, it grants a
power which until that decision
tbe Btates bad assumed to exist
and had exercised. The rightful
ness ef tbe enactment of such a
law cannot be disputed. It is
sic&iiloant that, while the vote on
tbe bill was 34 to 10, the minority
was composed exclusively of Pern
Mfati, and that only Ave Demo
cratic Senators favored the
saeasnre. The doctrine of State
rights finds its champions in this
ease almost wholly in the Repub
lican ranks.
It can be a matter of pride to
Americans, even if we are in hu
miliation over the fact that our
merchant marine on the great seas
is not to be boasted of, that upon
eergreat inland lakes the opposite
mete prevail, and our lake marine
is growing wonderfully. The
Boston Journal nays that the won
derful expansion of American
marine interests on the Great
Lakes -is somewhat strikingly
Uiustrated by the Inland Lloyd'
statistics, which show that the
bake tonnage built in 1889 aggre
gated 107.080 tons against 93,912
tons built on the whole Atlantic
sad 17,939 tons on the Pacific sea
board. Tbe number of vessels
balH on tbe lakes was 225, on the
iUatk 67, and on the Pacific
112. Not only, therfore, was the
aggregate nv tonnage of the lakes
great? than that of the Atlantic,
and almost equal to that of the
Atlantic and Pacific combined,
but the new lake veseels were on
an average of a much larger size
than the new vessels of the two
oceans. In fact, eight of the
steamships built in Cleveland last
year exceeded the aggregate ton
nage of the w hole 112 vessels built
on the Pacific coai.
The Prineville papers are now
saying that tbe Oregon Pacific
railroad has indefinitely postponed
construction, and advise efforts
to induce the proposed Dalles rail
road to push through to couiple
tion at an early date. Out Prine
ville friends will do well co hold
on. The Oregon Pacific is not
dead, it only sleepeth, and will
awaken soon with a vigor and
push that will be astonishing, and
the snort of the iron horse will
startle Prineville ere tbe Dalles
finds out how to water stock.
Tub ice dealers of New Haven,
in the wooden nutmeg state,
combined and tried to freeze their
customers to the high rates of 20
per ton ; but the consumers com
bined and thawed 'em out to $12
per ton, where the congelation
was agreeable to both parties.
A little worm called the girdler

propelled by electricity. It beut.s
