ABOUT OAS WELLS.
Talk of Sinkinj a Well in th. Vicinity
or Albany.
The recent discovery of natural
gas wells at Astoria, and Drain, in
Southern Oregon, has revived the
interest in tiie projeet of sinking
such a well in this vicinity. Ex
perts from .Pennsylvania have said
that indications point to the. exist
ence of natural gas, coal or oil in
the vicinity of this city, and it is
said some capitalist! are talking of
trying the experiment of sinking a
hole down a lew thousand feet lor
ibis purpose.
Reports from the Drain well
have encoui aged theuri in this. A
company with a capital stock of
$10l),(HX) is being organized at Drain
to develop it.
M. X. Dimmer, the gas and oil I
expert, who accompanied the party
of Portland capitalists to Drain last
Saturday, said concerning the dis
covery: ''The quality of the gas
id far superior to any I have ever
wen during nine years' experience
in the gas regions of Pennsylvania
and also in Mericoand Russia. The
indications for oil and coal are
stionger than in any territory I
have i-perated. The formation of
the soil and rocks is such that
both oil and coal must be in the
near vicinity. Mv idea is that the
surface gas is very shallow an. I j
tuat it i3 better the further down a
shaft is sunk. There must be a
heavy underlayer somewhere.
"My impression is that at a
depth of 1N feet below the bed rock
a pressure of t!0 pounds to the
square inch in a one inch pipe can
be obtained."
Dr. B. F. llamell, savs that the
! excitement over the discovery
.1
natural gas is growing intense. "I
was called upon to make au experi
ment ith the well." said he."that
was dug last winter. The well was
from twenty to twcnty-livo feet
deep, and the water was to oti'en
Kive that the man who dug it gave
up all idea of using it for domestic
purpose?. It tisted like oil so
much that a person could not drink
it. He wanted me to inquire into
the cause of it. The investigation
was to have been ma.!" Monday
evening, but as 1 was very --:-.y i
could not get there. A larje ( .-
was on hand waiting for ifiu
to put in an apjar.t?-ce
ami while discussing wneM.e.
j to wait longer or to defer t!;e t-x-1
periment, eouie one threw in a
j lighted match. Instantly the "ell
j was on fire, and a llame sh": up ':
feet high, illuminating the ( oi i u y
for some distance around, i lie
well burned fully half r.n hour.
It is presumed that the sui'j -e of
the water was covered wi'h o:l
and" that the well itself was ton
staidly lilling up with gas. This
incident has so aroused the peoplo
to the importance of the dieovcry
that the banks of Elk creek are
daily besieged by a small army of
prospectors.
Memorial Dav.
