EDITORIAL SOT EH.
The working men arc clamoring
tor eight hour per day as the
lays work, with a spirit that
eem? likely to win.
Chicago hti-hanil'd juivilegeH
are becomina ahridgeil. Lately a
Chicago wife recoverel $5000 from
her hubaml fur slander. Since
the world's fair is going to that
village there is no limit to the
demands that her citizens may
make.
Ex-Sheriff Flack, who lan
guishes behind the bars of the
New York prison he formerly pre
sided over will probably find that
the Sickles regime will not admit
of even the high priced prisoner's
street airings that he established
and waxed rich out of.
A California highwayman's
nose gave him away. That prom
inent feature protruded through
the masque he wore, and was sub
sequently identified by the driver
whose stage he held up and rob
bed. When he emerges from the
prison cell he will probably not
exhibit his probosc'19 when he goes
on robbing expeditions.
Fathf.k Ryas, of th Lowville,
"t.'ew York, Catholic church, was
wont to collect the church dues
by the application of blows even
subjecting ladies to instigation ;
b::t the bishop very quickly
changed that order of proceedure
by suspending the advocate of
corporal punishment collections.
Tiil indications from congress
are that the several bills before
that body ; upon the silver ques
tion, will eventually have to con
solidate into a measure that will
practically mean free coinage of
that metal. That is a situation
devoutly to be wished for and one
that can be contemplated by the
the people with a great deal (if
satisfaction.
The political honesty and equity
of the editor of the Alta California
mav be surmised, from the fact
that he has been denouncing the
McKinly tarilT bill as a monstrous
iniouitv. but lie now says: ' One
of the largest iron manufacturers
in Boston, and a leading republi
can, Fays if the McKinley bill pass
it will make New England per
manently democratic. This is the
only good argument yet made in
favor of the bill." So in his eyes
this monstrous iniquity will be
very good if it only conduces to a
democratic victory. Verily his
candor is refreshing.

coolie raised raw sugars which
come into the country free, and in
such quantities that the wants of
the Pacific coast are supplied and
about one hundred and fifty
million pounds spared for ship
ment East, where, after paying a
heavy freight, it comes into suc
cessful competition with sugars
which have paid a duty of 2'.j
cents a pound. The recent display
of enterprise in the beet sugar
line in this state was simply
meant to humbug the people and
to use as capital against the abro
gation of the sugar duty. There
has been no time sinre the
Hawaiian reciprocity treaty went
into effect that it has nut ih-en
possible to t rush out all attempts
at !cet sugar ciiluirc. The lailuve
of the only genuine competing
beet sugar plant proves this con
clusively, and those who contend
that the retention of the duty on
raw sugars would build up a beet
sugar industry on this coast, in
the face of Hawaiian competition,
are either interested in foreign
sugar production or hopelc-sly
misinformed.'
The mineral resource of China, it
is said, will make a wonderful tir
in the world when they come into
active market. In the matter of
coal according to a Chinese paper,
that country is known to contain
coal-fields of twenty times the ex
tent of all the coal-fields in Eu
rope. Human alone, it is eaid,
contains as much coal as all Eu
rope. Shantung has gold, silver,
lead, iron and coal mines. South
Manchuria, Chihli, and Shantung
have coal-fields stretching under
250,000 square li of their area, and
Shansi 14,000 square li. It is cal
culated that the coal therein
stored would last the world 2,433
years at a yearly consumption of
300,000,000 tons. Hupeh, Kiangsi
and Mongolia are all said to con
tain coal, copper, and iron mines.
