the same time scarcity of com
mercial bills has caused sterling
exchange to advance, and the
same people who were recently
talking of the possibilities of gold
imports arc considering whether
exports of gold can be averted.
Money tends toward a lower rate
at London, but the Bank of Eng
land xad the Bank of Germany
lost several millions last week.
The iron market is unsettled and
again lower, Southern No. 1 being
quoted as low as $16 50 in New
York, which is said to net $12 at
furnaces, as to be on a parity u icb
prices offered at the- West. A
further fall is reported at 1 itts
burg, but Philadelphia accounts
mentioned that the recent decline
has induced more buying. The
new and large Southern works are
trying to find a market for their
iron, while the aggregate con
