Miss M. Hi!!, teacher of a country
school near here, was brutally as
saulted to-day by one white "and
two colored' tramps. She was
fearfully maltreated. The tramps
filled her mouth with dirt so as to
prevent any outcry. During the
struggle w ith her assailant three
of her ribs were broken. It is
feared she will die. Hundreds of
men ate seard.ing the country for
the tramps and ii caught they will
be lynched.

man named Jones on a message
from another Jones in Hornbrook,
Cal. Tlie dispatch said that Jones
in this ciiy was about to come in
po)seK?itm of a fraudulent draft for
$500 from a lady in Henley, Cali
fornia. A decoy package was sent
to the Portland Jones through t ie
mail, but before he could get it he
was anes ed. The prisoner claims
that he received a dNpatch fiom
from his siter in California some
time ago asking whether he was
in need of money. He wired:
"Yes; send me $500." While
waiting for the money I e was ar
rested on a message frt m Jones

false pretence, as the officer was
not ailowd to wait in making tho

Giluu re was on a moving engine
at the Narrow Gauge depot near
the factory, and ii attempting to
jump off fell. He tried to save him
self and in doing so placed his arm
under the engine. The member
was fearfully mangled and ampu

Goodrich, ticket agent for the
Union Pacific railroad, was fined
ten dollars and costs to-day in East
Portland by Recorder Alayo for
soliciting on Southern Pacific
trains and in their depot on the
