It i-j naid in view of the wonder

if we had been told lifry years ayo
of the marvelous ctfects. of hili
exjilosives which we now nee every
day we should have laughed at
the idea of gunpowder luring hu

to tell us that we could talk in uu
ordinary tone of voice to a man
500 miles away, and that he could
not only hear us, but distinguish
the person speaking by the tone

And yet to-day dynnnyte and the

IIi'man society now anl jirobab
i v for many years to come demands
t lie death penalty for the crime of
murder. The state of New York
has decided that electricity shall
b : the agent of that death penalty,
and the courts have sustained that
law by their rendered decision.
The Electrical World says that it
is unfortunate that the law was
ever passed, for it can do nothing
but harm to electrical interests;
but in vw of the facts the decis
ion of the court was to have been
expected. We can not but look
with regret 0:1 the progress of the
case, at every step calling public
attention not to the marvelous
usefulness ot electricity, not to its
exquisite adaptability to the needs
of industry, but to the possibilities
of its misuse, and to its undoubted
but preventable dangers. There
has not been any reasonable doubt
of t tie power of electricity, deliber
ately applied for that purpose, to
produce certain death, and every
tifoit to show the contrary has
only tended t " weaken ,
public confidence in those
who ought to gi.ide public opinion
