forests in the Eastern stales, it is
interesting to notice that while a
few years ago the shipment of
lumber by the way of Cape Horn
to tho Pacific coast formed a large
part of the carrying trade of
American vessels, the 9ituat.on is
exactly reversed to-day as regards
direction. It is becoming extreme
ly difficult to get timber in the
East for keelsons, masts ami spars
for the large sailing ships now
buildin;. Enterprising ship-owners
and builders are looking to the
Pacilic coast for their mj. plies.
Oregon pine in now used for these
purposes, and the industry of pre-1
paring the timber for ship-build-;
ing is daily growing in importance, j
