Mr. J. J. Swan of this place
brought to our ollice last week a
ve-iy good specimen of coal which
he found on Mr. Bishop's farm
near the head of Hamilton creek.
The fact that coal beds are being
discovered in many parts of Linn
county seems to justify the lielief
of old settlers that there is a strat
um of coal underlying this section
of country; and just as certain as
we become the leading manufac
turing State of the Fnion will this
tuel deposit be forthcoming.

The performance of the Lew
Concert Company at the opera i
house last night was greeted by a
large and brilliant audience, w ho
were wildly enthusiastic in ap
plauding the magnificent music
rendered. The great cornet player
responded very generously to the
urgent encores.
There is no doubt about Mr.
Lew's right to the claim of being
the greatest cornetist in the world, j
From the opening number in j
Rossini's "lnllamatns" to the j
close in "Home Sweet Home,'' the ;
result ot a talented life-work upon
the cornet was shown in the won
derful rich, clear, tones of the in
strument, whether in the pure and
simple aria, or in tie- labyrinth of
tiie variations.
Mine. Stella Levy has a bi-auti-
fill voice and delighted the j
audience. Mr. W. J. I.aviu. the
tenor, and Mr. E. M. Shoiiert, the !
pianist, each created a pleasing :
impression upon their
and their numbers vi-r
