B'methiBgoftheEarlyLlfeof th. Grcut A republican convention for
Coraetitt -A WoLderfnl Maiioiiu, j I-inn county is called to meet in
the city of Albany on Wednesday,
Levy is a Londoner by birth, j jpnl i'th, 1800, at 10 o'clock a. m.
and w hen a mere child kept awake ur tnc purpose of selecting ten
nights to listen to the cornet plav-' (10 delegates to the republican
er of an orchestra near the res';-1 Hlatc convention to be held in
rortianJ, Oregon on April 16, 181K),
deuce of his parents.
Being infuriated w ith the sound
of a coruet, he contrived to save
enough pennies, when five years
old, to buy one; but his una'ppre
cialive parents eomjielled him to
spend his pennies for boots in
stead of the longed for cornet.
I luring his lioybood he followed
the bands in the Park, when they
gave concerts andliecauie a regular
music-stand for the cornet player
studying his every movement.
Young Levy yearned to -lie t he
owner of a cornet.
When aliout seventeen years
old his father invested" fif
teen shillings for one, from a pawn
broker. It was defective, never
theless it was a cornet, and Jx-vy
practiced on it so severely that his
life was put in jeopardy. Soon
after his recovery, however, Dan
Godfrey, the leader of the "Gren
adier Guard Band," heard of our
hero, and engaged him as a mem-Ihu-
of his baud, at the magnificent
salary of two dollars per week.
This was the total amount Levy
received for two years, but he
practiced continuously ten and
twelve hour' a day, and was soon
looked upon as a marvel by the
great leader.
In 1S01 he was engaged at tin
Princess Theatre, at thirty shill
ings a week, and his salary soon
increased to fifty shillings per
week.
The next season he was ollered
a tiositioii at the Koval
Opera at live pounds a week, and I
also secured n position at theCrvs-'
to nominate candidates for the
various county offices, and to
transact such other business as
may properly come before the con
vention. The county convention will be
eomjxiscd of 80 delegates, appor
tioned one delegates at large for
each precinct and one for every
twenty-live votes or fraction over
half that number cast in the pre
cinct for Hinger Hermann for
member of congress at the general
election in June, 18K8, as follows:
