COST EASTS EDUCATE US.
Perhaps there aro no conditions
in life that bring out the blessings
we enjoy, and educate us as to the
value of existence, as does the con
trasts between lifes extremes.
We are very apt to divide hu
man life into the pleasants and
unpleasant, the sweet and the
bitter, joy and sorrow, good and
evil, and to suppose that out of
the former springs all our happi
ness and welfare; out of the latter
all our misery and failure. In so
doing, however, we entirely ignore
the fact that contrast is a neces
sary and valuable element in life
and happiness. All true art rccog
nizes this need and ministers to it
The painter studies the effect of
light and shade, of the bold and
powerful stroke and the quick and
delicate touch. The orator is now-
fervid and passionate, now tender
and sympathetic, now cool and
argumentative. The actor plays
on each emotion In turn, now
thrilling us with indignation, then
melting us with pity, now convul-
t-inir us with laughter, then din
solving us in tears. The poet por
trays the most opposite phases of
character. A recent English paper
speaks of Shakespeare and Milton
as illustrating this art. "The play
that exhibits Iachimo, one of the
greatest villians, gives us "also
Imogen, the sweetest -woman that
lives in verse; Miranda is brought
into opposition with Caliban; if
there had not )eeii an Iago we
should not havehadaDesdemona;
and for Milton's Eve we have to
thank the arch-fiend, who was
found by lthuriel, 'squat like a
toad,' close at her ear, 'assaying
by his devilish art to reach the
organs of her fancy.' " If nature
and art are thus rendered attrac
tive by contrast, so is human life
in all its phases. Take the family,
the germ of all society, and note
the contrasts it presents. Here
are old and young, .map and
-woman, strength and weakness,
power and dependence, knowledge
and ignorance, self control and
helplessness, dwelling together in
mutual happiness, each develop
ing the finest fruits of character in
the test. Take away Jhe contrasts
and the family vanishes.
So. in a less degree, social circles
of every Tcind are improved and
elevated by the cordial touch of
oppositcs. The rich and poor, the
cultured and the uneducated, the
theori.it and the practical man,
thej-fHing and tin- old, the married
.arid single, the merchant and the
mechanic, ran help each other,
and that society will thrive tho
best which brings them into pleas
ant ' and wholesome relations,
Capital and lalor are great con
trasts, but only as they come to
gether in harmonious operation
ran the highest value of either be
envolved. Even tho joy and
sorrow of life, contrasts as they aro
may lie brought into harmony,
lioth, w hen rightly borne, combine
to form the full and rich character
that one alone could not bring
forth. If there were no dark places
in our lives we should not value
the brightness; if there were no
failures we should care not for
success; if we have no disapoint
ments we should have few hopes,
and with adversity prosperity
would lose most of its charm.
Farmers who question the utility
of Agricultural Experimental
Stations will do well to make
themselves aquainted with the
purposo of such institutions, their
methods and the results of their
work in order that criticism may
have the merit of intelligence.
The relations of Mexico with
thli country are becoming bttaj
understood aud of a more amicable
nature. It is now thoroughly re
cognized in that country that the
people of this country have no in
tention oi encroaching upon
Mexican soil, which ollaye and
quieta the ieeling that has been ex
tent that we were inclined too fili
buster. SEN. STANWRD'S SCHEME.
It is said that Illinois in 1820
tried Senator Stanford's plan for
the government money loaning
scheme. A state bank was formed
to issue bills to loan to the people
on personal security to the amount
of $100 and real estate to $1000, 6
per cent interest. The Chicago
Tribune gives the result of the ex
periment : It was directed that
$300,000 should be issued at once,
and distributed among the four
bank dietricts into which the state
was divided, in proportion to the
number of inhabitants. The sum
was absorbed at once and precious
little of it was ever paid back. The
bank directors were generally
politicians who wanted to make
friends, and their notions of what
constituted good security were
broad.
By 1824 these bank bills, though
they bore 2 per cent, annual in
terest and were redeemable by the
state in ten years' time, had de
preciated to 25 cents on the dollar,
and, as usual, had driven all other
money out of circulation. An at
tempt to keep up their credit by
making them a sort of legal tender,
which an execution creditor had
to take or wait three years for his
pay, did not save them. The
bank was wound up in 1831, leav
ing the state out about $500,000.
The los-on was cheap at that
price.
All straws are caught at by
drowning men, and the advocates
of free trade will soon be harping
on the failures, as being caused by
that ruinous tariff. "Ruined by
fair weather," was the correct ex
planation given of a considerable i
failure caused by inability to collect-
money on woolen goods sold
to retailers. The succession of)
two mild winters has cut down
materially the demand for such
goods. The retailers bought in
the expectation that the usual de
mand from customers would come,
and because it did not they were
unable to meet their obligations,
and thus a firm of long-established
and high npntation goes down.
Rut in a few days, it is safe to pre
dict, this faihirto of dealers in
woolen goods will be editorially
quoted by Free-Trade newspapers
as proof of the pernicious effect of
the tariff.
The blonde type writer rms again
proved to be a dangerous domestic
article. This time it spirits away
a Buffalo, X. Y., life insurance
president. Creditors mourn his
absence. The prayers w ill have to
be changed to protect us against
the wiles of the type writer.
Michigan peach buds are said
to be frozen so badly that the crop
is ruined. Probably in the peach
season the Michigan article will
show up in good style.
