EDITORIAL NUTES.
The danger that lurks in land
Klides has been amply illustrated,
this season. In various localities
the treacherous slides have not
only destroyed property, but have
ulso caused the destruction of
lives, and cant sadneps and gloom
over communities.
The lack of the requisite coin,
or the brains and cunning to draw
the coin from other individuals
who conld use him as a tool for
vengeance or spite, han at last re
tired the Tichbornc claimant from
public view in England. He can
now go back to his butcher's block !
or starve.
It makes a great differance
whoso ox is being gored. The
Washington legislature has been
held tip as one of the wor6t of
legislative bodies, nntil it opens
out upon the mortgage tax law
subject, when lo ! and behold it is
a pattern of wisdom and propriety.
Ah I yea, anything to make a seem
ing plea on that side of the ques
tion. Tub English elections -this sea
son seem to be resulting in liberal
gains. Gladstonian candidates are
in the ascendant having been
elected in nearly every case. These
facts, and indeed all practical
pointers from Continental Europe
point to tho rapid advancement of
liberal ideas. The days of mon
archies is rapidly drawing to a
close.
The spirit of North pole explor
ation, which has been dead since
the return of the ill starred Greely
party, is again on the revive, this
time by the Xorweigian people,
who have been urged into enthus
iasm over the prospect of being
first in at the polo and flying the
Norwegian colors from its apex.
To them be the glory if they want
it,and the rest of the world can com
plaisantly look on and appland
vociferously when they gain it. To
the victor belong the spoils and if
they can find such an article at
the North pole for mercy sake let
'em bave it.
The peculiar phase of mind that
enables persons, who claim
honesty, foresight and calcula
tion, to see a bettering of the
farmer's condition by admitting
tree raw material, thus increasing'
competition and still lowering the
price of commodities which is the
present cause of the farmers em
barrassments, is truly h wonder,
and approaches to the condition
that assumes white is black and
black is wh ite. To assume that
the tariff is the cause of low prices
of farm products is a claim with
out foundation, for the present
tariff ruled when farm products
brought good prices, and to cape
goat the tariff is disingenuous to
say the least, and savors very
much of an effort to create a false
impression on ground; perfectly
untenable.
Onk of the claimti of tho English I
people, and thoeo who aro enamor
ed of every thing that U "English
you know," is that a national
debt ia a national blesmug. That
the bondn that the government
pays such heavy interest upon are
really tho anchor pheet of the ship
of etate. The thinking man, how
ever, is not yet ready to admit the
proposition that a nation is bene
fited by being obliged to pay
heavy interest charges to holders
of "consols," for tho fact is too
obvious that one set of people must
be taxed in order to raise the
money necessary to pay interest
charges to the other set, but there
is no doubt wmething lo the idea
that so long as the government can
meet its obligations the existence
of a debt is an element of stability.
This being the case, the question j
naturally arises, What would be
the result if Senator -Stanford's
scheme were put into practiee.and
the national government were!
converted into a money lender? j
If everybody owed the government j
what incentive would .here 1 for
people to come to its rescue in j
times of DeJil? ' Would thev not!

The Burchell case, which has
resulted in the finding of Burchell
guilty of the murder of the young
Englishman Benwell, w ill cause a
more thorough examination into
the methods and practices of the
so called emigration agencies in
London. These places offer great
inducements for pupils to learn
the farming, stock-raising and
fruit growing business in America.
Tho youth who signs a contract
with the agency is forced to pay ho j
much down and to defray his own
expenses. The chances aro that
ho soon becomes disgusted and
cither leaves for other parts of the
country or returns to England.
They have had considerable ex
perience with these frauds in Cali
fornia, the fruit-growing whool
farm in Fresno being an example, s
