Ihey Will Eutibliah A PnMic Hospital in
Connecticn With the Proposed
Orphan's Hera?.
For several Months the citizens
of Albany have been interested in
the question of the establishment
of a public hospital in this citv. A
proposition is now before the peo
ple from the Undies Aid Society,
which ii met by theprojK-rcncour
agement, seems likely to result in
the erection of such tin institution
in connection with the proposed
orphan's home. A few davs inro
the Hkrai.d publislie.1 the follow
ing statement from the memU-rs
of the society.
Will you please give us space in
your paper to make a statement.
There seems to be some of our
citizens who do not understand
that the Ladies Aid Society intend
to build a hospital together with
the orphans home. They intend to
make themselves thoroughly con
versant with the plans and" work
ing of the best hospitals in the
state, and it the citizens come for
ward and assist in this, a they
have done in other enterprises, we
will have a hospital equal to any
in the state, one that Albany can
be justlv proud of.

that they freely renlizo what an
important factor in the prosperity
of a community a well conducted

seconded by the business and
wealthy men of the city and coun
try, with the abundant resources at
your doors, practically nndevel
ojied, the future greatness of Al
bany as a commercial center is an
assured fact. While 1 am at pres
ent a non-resident, the course pur
sued by your pajier and yonr peo
pie generally is in pleasing contrast
with that of other towns and com
munities of the coast which I have
wsi ted, where they have indulged
in the modern American pastime
of a toom, which inevitably re
results in bringing people Jo the
scene of action only to be disap
pointed, and those who ctn will
turn their backs upon the boomed
district, and many have spent their
all in reaching the promised land
and cannot get awav. But one
md all curse (he day that brought
tliem there ami the methods em
ployed to accomplish it. But here
in Oregon you seem to rely confi
dently upon your beautiful re
sources, and, like a man selling a
staple article at less than cost, you
arc willing for people to come and
see for themselves, without the im
petus of a boom. While 1 grant
that vour city is rapidlv coming to

i as is doubtless proven by the vol
ume of business shown by the y
banks, business houses and factor
ies, ami that her prominent resi
den'is have shown a very com
mendable spirit of enterprise and
pluck in the past, yet a stranger
who has time for observation sees
much that should lo done in the
way of public improvements and
inviting trade in order to retain
and increase the city's present ini-1
IKjrtancc. r-or instance, your
streets are in a horrible condition,
yonr public buildings are a dis
credit to your otherwise thrifty
city, and aioc all you have not a
hotel building in keeping with the
progress of the c ty, and with the
class of eople which your re
newed efforts are sure to bring to
yonr midst. Many towns on Puget
Sound exhaust Jtheir vitality in
lighting rivals; why? because
there is not legitimate business

they will soon acknowledge the
points, ft remains only for your
Board of Trade to extend the hand
of fellowship, when they will not
long remain outsidt the fold but
fail in line and join with you in the
forward line to future greatness,
for with a determined ctlbrt iijion
her pait the superior advantages
possessed by Albany over other
points in the valley as a distribut
ing center must be acknowledged
by every one who will take the
time to study her position.
It has been a source of much
surprise to me during mv stay here !
that your people have not seen the I
importance of a free bridge across
the Willamette at this point. Itsj
value is at once apparent to the i
most casual observer, for bv it a i
most vainanio addition to yovir
business can be made by acquiring
that of an important portion of a
valnablo addition to yovir
! rich district which is now divided
between several smaller places.
Even the people who reside in
j other counties seem surprised that I
sucli an enterprise has not long
since been started.
It is too often the case that a
few, not all, of the old settlers, j
wiien approached about making
improvements or to assist in the
progress of his town, to eav it has
been good enough fo him for the
past quarter of a century and it is
in his opinion good enough for
those who have come later. He
seems to lose sight of the fact that
he is living in an age of rapid
progress, and that in order to keep
up with the procession of other
cities he must divest himself of the
views which were consideed at
par L'O years ago, but are now at a
ruinous discount, and unless he
puts his shoulder to the wheel he
is sure to be left in the mire of in
action. The only way to convert
such men is to touch their pride,
and that cannot be more easily or
harmlessly done than through "the
medium of the newspaper. I hope
you have none of these men among
you, but if you have. Bhow them
the way out of their haunts of
mossbackism, and bring them in
lo tho bright sunahine of progress
and development. By this means
you will soon have a city which
will be a compliment to "the rich
and providence-favored country by
which she is surrounded, and one
in which a portion at least of the
constantly increasing tide of west
ward immigration will be glad to
come and make a home.
