USE OF RICHES.
Solomon's aphorism that all is
vanity, eveu coupled with the
testimony of all subsequent
philosophers that riches are the
baggage or impedment of virtue,
does not hinder the arduous and
active pursuit of those same riches
by all the sons and daughters of
men. Bacon observes, and with
much truth, that "of great riches
there is no use, except it be in the
distribution; the rest is but
conceit." This truth, at least, is
now more generally accepted
than in any previous age. Men
with great riches have sometimes
nought to distribute their wealth
for the public good after their i
deaths, holding on to their riches
out of vanity until the last mom
ent of life, but recently there has
been displayed a growing disposi
tion on the part of rich men to
seek the pleasures of distribution
during their own lives s much
wiser course in every way. It
secures the use of their money for
the intended purpose, which a will
Dometimes fails to do, and obtains
for the generous given that reward
of satisfaction which is his due.
To this disposition must be as
cribed the building of great public
libraries, schools, institutes, and
colleges and the establishment of
large, useful industries by rich
men who have learned in time the
lessons oi philosophy. It is im
possible for the very wealthy to
spend or use their income upon
themaelves. Their capacity is
limited, and beyond that they
stand as cust'dia!.s or trustees of
a fund which they may squander
or donate to others or to charity,
but can not use for themselves. It
is this view of great ri lies (over
and beyond the necessities of the
individual) as a kind of trust fund
that is beginning to bear fruit in
systematic efforts to distribute for
tunes for the benefit of the general
public. It is somewhat curious to
observe that even in the days of
Bacon exactly the same view of
men's duties was taken, that is now
beginning to prevail. That philo
sopher observed : "Therefore
measure not thine advancements
by quantity, but frame them by
measure, and defer not charities
till death ; for certainly, if a man
weigh it rightly,' he that doth so
ia rather liberal of.another man's
than of his own." There is another
suggestion by Bacon that has a
great deal of force in our day and
generation. He says : "Men leave
their riches either to tlteir kindred
or to the public, and (moderate
portions prosper best in both. A
great state (estate) left to an heir
is as a lure to all the birds of prey
round alxnit to seize on him if he
be not the better established in
years aud judgment. Likewise
glorious gifts jtnd foundations ai e
like sacrifices without salt, and
but the painted nepnlchers of alms
which soon will putrify and cor
rupt inwardly." Who has not
observed the general truth of this
warning? The heir to a greivt
estate coming to it unprepared by
experience for the enjoyment or,
management of great riches suffire
it to fall away from him or dissi
pates it in riotous living. So also
the church or charity too richly
endowed attracts to its contr. 1
either dishonest or easy-going peo
ple, and fails to do the good that a
struggling congregation or con
pany accomplishes through the
unselfish zeal of its individual
members. But if there is no re: 1
use of great riches except it be in
the distribution, and if in that
distribution it be wise to divide
the estate in modern portionp, it
follows that the philanthropists
who seek to found public inatitu
tionfi uueht t consider well the
hcojmj and needs of their charitable
fniirwhitinns. This thev fan do
with t-ertainly.only while they are
present to direct the oTKjrations
nnl nlwerve the effects of their
rlmrilahln work. What would
"foundation" in
Bacon's day would be very small
.... i .i ...
m ours, jno nniu can w -iiii
except that which arises out of
the amount of good to be accom
plished, but whatever the endow
ment may be, it is well to keep
within the limit rather than over
step. An institution with a sur
plus of revenue attracts vultures ;
an institution barely able to con
tinue its work invites helpers to
join it.
The growing tendency to make
dispostion of riches during lifetime i
is one of the hopeful signs of the
times and is to be highly com
mended.
THE SATIONAL1STS.
TbTiircKiMroR of thk Hrrald.
In a recent editorial, on these
clubs, you seem to labor under the
occu-jgame mistake that so many do,
that is that they are luiiy are
wholly committed to the ideas set
forth in the novel "Looking Back
ward." It is true that its author
is a Nationalist, and it may be
that he hopes to see his ideas car
ried out some time, but neither he
nor others believe them jtractical
at the 'present time. The purpose
of these reformers is to advocate
the nationalization of labor gradu
ally, not at once nor in any cut
and dried manner, but learning as
they progress they expect to hold
all the good aud reject the bad.
There are few who go so far as to
advocate the immediate ownership
of the railways, the majority pre
ferring to make tho experiment
first with the telephone, the tele
graph and the express. With the
knowledge and experience thus
gained we can determine whether
we are ready for so gigantic a
movement of the government as
the ownership of over 150,000
miles of railways. 1 hat this will
be the outcome of the present
lalor troubles seems most prob
able, therefore it is the part of
wisdom to discuss the matter as
you have done, calmly and honest
ly, rather than as some of your
contemporaries, who show by their
haste to condemn wholly and
without argument, that they have
given the questions at issue very
little if any serious thought.
