TAKING A UUS A LOS (!.
The recent encounter of Taulbce
and Kincaid, at the capitol in
Washington, resulting as it did in
the serious wounding of Mr. Taul
bee, bears a moral that is plain to
all who carefully observe the facts
and conditions. That moral is
especially applicable to the native
ftate r the two individuals. The
moial is that guns are not good
things to carry ultout. As the
Tribune says the whole trouble
with the esteemed commonwealth
f Kentucky seems to be that she
takes her gun with her. Tiide
Joe thought he recognized the
voice of a friend. Still, he took
his gun with him. A Kentuckian
goes to the postoffice after mail.
Still, he takes his gun with him.
lie attends church Sunday morn
ing. Still, he takes his gun with
him. He goes to his own wedding.
Still, he has his gun in the tail of
his claw-hammer coat, lie goes
as a delegate to a meeting of a
peace society, and reads a paper
m "Arbitration the Hope of Civil
ization." Still, he has his gun
where it is handy. Your true
Kentuckian attends his grand
mother's funeral. Still, he is pre
pared to perforate the other
mourners if necessary. If Ken
tucky could Ik- induced to leave
her gun at home even part of the
time, her population would take a
srrcat upward bouml. lor vears
Kentuckians have gone about
most peaceful and pastoral of oc
cupations still, they have taken
their guns with them. The Hat
fields and McCoys have always
had their guns with them. So
have the Howards and the Turn
ers. Likewise the Frenches and
Kversoles. In Ituwan county the
physician takes his gun with him,
and the p.ttient has his under his
pillow. Nor is the gun always
taken in the wild mountain le
gions alone. f.it. fall two of the
most prominent men in the state
stepped into the ost office of the
town where they resided to get
their mail. They had their guns
with them or weapons just as
elFective.
The moral is just as applicable
outside of the state of Kentucky as
inside of it, only just at present
the greatest publicity of such cases
come out there. The gun is the
producer of nine-tenths of the
tragedies that wreck human lives
and make such an amount, of
human suffering.
The congressional wiseacres,
especially in tlie senate, very often
get wroth at the sins of omission
and commission jerpetrated by
the newspapers, and ebbuliate
about the matter. The Tribune says
that Senator Hoar toid a consider
able part of the whole truth when
lie gave as the reason why debates
in congress are not more fully re
ported in the newspapers, that
they were so frequently uninter
esting. Space in nil newspaper is
valuable. In the metrOpolitrn
dailies it is worth several hundred
dollars per column. During ses
sions of congress there ase many
events and proceedings taking
place every day in Washington
besides the congressional debates
which must be reported. These
fill several columns. To give up
an additional page to set speeches,
the main facts in which have usu
ally been printed and reprinted
many times, would be a sacrifice
f space for which the papers
would have no adequate return.
It is human nature to magnify the
iiiwrtuwe of matters in which
one is intensely interested, nnd

to exist. Senator I Hair's charges
that the Press has been deterred
by corrupt motives from publish
ing full accounts of the arguments
in favor of his Kducatioual bill do
do credit to his intelligence. In
the first place, it has reported
them many times year after year,
and has given the subject all the
attention it is entitled to. In the
next place, to charge that 10,000
newspapers, representing all
parties and all communities, can
be brought up like cattle, is to
charee what is loth absurd and
outrageous.
A I'uoi'osrnoN for the govern
ment to loan money, in a special
government note or greenback
issue, to individuals, - upon real
estate security, has been a pet
scheme of socialistic inclined peo
ple for several years. Now, how
ever, Senator Stanford of Cali
fornia, has formulated the identi
cal same scheme with a long series
of whereas and a resolution, and
presented it to the United States
senate, as an original idea of his
own. The original authors of the
plan will be astonished to see it
masquerading under the patronage
of the millionaire senator from
California.
Tin-: movement in France to
annex the African kingdom of
Dahomey to France, is one that
will receive the sanction and com
mendation of the civilized world,
provided it is carried out in a
manner to make it effective, and
shut off the horrible canibalistic
massacres that have always been
a feature of religious and political
observances in that worst of all of
the African minor kingdoms
Dahomy has been near enough to
be observed by the civi'ized world,
but remote enough to be leyond
the control, heretofore, of the civ
ilized nations. If France can con
trol its Amazonian guarded royal
carnibal king it is well and good.
