The Young Men's Christian As
sociation owe a vote of thanks to
Mr. G. L. Blackman, in particular,
and a number of other gentlemen,
for tc kindly helping to procure
two dozen new chairs, which were
especially needed for the Sabbath
afternoon meetings. The associa
tion is trying to do a good work,
and with the kind words and con
tributions it is receiving from the
citizens it surely will succed. Any
desiring to join the association will
have an opportunity at the busi
ness meeting Friday next.
The Oregon City Locks.
A dispatch received in this citv
last night form the superintendent
of the locks at Oreuon Citv stated
that they would not be open before
next Monday, and probably not

Sheriff Moss, of Josephine

formally ojiened Saturday, when a
great throng visited them.
Robert Dunlap and Lawrence
Madden, two loggers from Brown's
it-land, came to Salem this morn
ing on business, coming down in a
light skill', and during the day im
biotd pretty freely of strong
liquor. They started on their re
jurn this afternoon at 2 o'clock
Irom the foot of Ferry street, and
.Madden, who was extremely
drunk, insisted on rowing. When
well out in the stream he took a
drink from a bottle. This he ic
peaied several times and in the
hilarity one of the oars floated
away and the boat drifted down
i he river to State street. Madden
attempted to move around and in
so doing the boat dipped water
and soon filled. Dunlap jumped
out and succeeded in swimming
ashore. Madden clung to the boat
and at thfi foot of court street it
capsized, throwing the drunken
man under and when rescued he
i was almost gone.
Our Coal Mine.
There seems to be no doubt as to
the abundance of coal in the
ledges recently located up the San
tiam, the only doubt being as to
the quality or commercial value of
the coal. Capital stands ready to
invest in opening up the mines as
soon as the value of the deposit is
ascertained. To ascertain the j
value of the find, the property
must be thoroughly and svstemat-1
ieally "prospected" by experts.
This may not cost but a few hun
dred dollars and it may cost sev
eral thonsand. The value of the
coal ought to be properly tested,
for if the coal has the quality and
quantity, every property owner at
least in The Forks is directly in
terested in the immediate develop
ment of the mine, because the
development of such an industry
will at or.ee enhance general values
to a greater or less extent ; and no
one wishes or has the right to re
tard the growth and prosperity of a
community, when it is possible to
prevent it. This being the case it
is expected that the steps have or
soon will be taken to show up the
value or non-value of our coal in

Mr. . G. Steel was seen vester-
day by a Oregonian reporter in
reference to the Umiqua River
railroad for the construction of
which he holds a contract with
the companv. "My partner and
I," said Mr." Steel, "visited New
York in December last nnd had
little difficulty in placing the
lxmdsof the road satisfactorily.
The line passes through a rich
fertile cuii n try, on a water level
route, and has tributary to it a
country which will export over it
annually about 2,000,000 bushels
of wheat, half as many bushels of
oats, 1,000,000 pounds of wool,
and other products in like propor
tion. "The road starts from Drain, a
station on the Southern Pacific
line 100 miles south of Portland,
and extends fifty-live miles along
the banks of Elk creek and the
Umpqiia river to a jxiint near

water, navigable by heavy draught i
vessels. It is a singularly easy
road to construct, Its heaviest
grade being fifty-two feet to a mile
and the line does not average two

"The inhabitants of Northern
Douglas county are jubilant over
the assurance of the road, and it
will open up and make famous
one of the richest valleys in Ore
gon, which in the nature of things
has been kept in the dark thus
far."
Mr. Steel and Mr. Heald, his
partner, who was formerly Wanle
the tragedian's leading business
manager, left for Jrain Saturday
afternoon to make arrang' mcnts
for construction work.
