Republican Stale Convention.
At the meeting of the republican
state central committee in Port
land "Wednesday all of the counties
except three were represented and
there Avere but few proxies. Com
mittees on call and apportionment
having' been appointed, the com
mittee took recess until two
o'clock. In the afternoon the
delegates, numbeiing 218, were,
on report of the committee, aj
portioned among the different
counties, giving one delegate at
large to each county, and one dele
gate for each 1 75 votes cast for
Binger ' Herrinan in 1888, or frac
tion over one-half. This gives
Linn county ten delegates'. The
state convention was called to meet
at Portlahtl,-on' April Kith,
3 he calr invites all voters who lie
eve in American ' markets for
American productions, in the right
of every voter in the nation to cast
a free ballot and have it honestly
counted, and in a liberal support
of our common schools, to unite in
selecting delegates to this convention--The
utmost harmony pre

victory in June. The committee
recommend that the primaries be
held on Saturday, April 5, t8!H),

Mr. Patrick Farrel returned to
his home in Eugene last Tuesday.
He has been here for a month
teaching the band. They have
made excellent progress.
Dr. Conkling Lectured here last
Monday and Tuesday nights on
the subject of the "Ten lost tribes
of Israel." He advanced some
cranky ideas concerning them.
Mr. Smith of Brownsville :
in town last Friday. While ben- he
liought a box of cigars to treat

that he is a candidate for sheriff.
Stockmen are lieginning to lose
heavily owing to the continous
bad weather. The past two
months have been bard on stock.
Feed is very scarce and many have
been out for several days.
Mr. Charles Aiken, wife and two
daughters arrived here some days
ago from Wisconsin. Mr. Aiken
has purchased a farm of J. C. Cox
about one-half mile from town.
The 'annual Fcliool meeting' was
held b-day. ' There was a 'good
turn' out vf the 'voters. Mr. W.
B. Glass ' w;a re-elected clerk.

trict is in good shape, leing out of
debt and supplies for another year
paid for.

The towns of Oregon, without
exception, s re enjoying a healthy
growth.
Dr. Alon.o Cleaver, of llaker
City, has been appointed register
of the land otlice at LaGrande.
In Seattle 142 building permits

The people of Polk and Marion
counties are moving in the matter
of replacing the bridge across the
Willamette at Salem. The bridge
proved itself to be a great public
necessity, and will be rebuilt. T
Last Wednesday morning the
thermometer registered 17 degrees
below zero at Ileppner. The loss
of cattle and sheop was not large
until the last cold weather, but it
is apprehended that many will die
now, as feed is very scarce.
Frank Hover, the well-known
pugilist, arrived in Portland Mon
day night from San Francisco on
the Oregon. It is understotid that
he w ill challenge the winner of the
Conley-Flaberty light which comes
off" at "the pavilion Saturday night.
In Seattle during the month of
February there were 11 fires in
tents by which 20 were destroyed
and one damaged twice. The total
loss resulting from these fires, as
estimated by the department, is
$1S,U50. The losses as estimated
by those burned out is greatly in
excess of this.
Hon. II. 15. Miller, of Josephine
county, is reported as having a
boom for congressman. Mr.Miller
is a republican and a shrewd poli
tician and it is stated that he has
claims on the party managers at
Portland. This "enlarges the
aspirants for congressional honors
in the republican ranks to four,
Hermann, Leasure, , Ellis and
Miller.
