entered the house of Mr. Jeorge

where he and his wife lodged. He
heard his 4-months-old child cry-,
ing, and fearing there might be

the stairs to reach the apartments I
occupied by his wife. A light was j

of another lodger, Mr. O. W. Sim
mons, and frantically begged him
to seek the coroner, as he believed
his wife had committed suicide.
Coroner DeLin was sent for, and
uKn investigating the. case con
cluded that the young wife, not
yet 17 years of age, did not take
her ow n life, but that her sudden
demise was due to an affection of
the heart.
COAST NOTES.
The Pacific, Chehalis and East
ern railroad has incorporated to
build from Willapa river at a point
near Shoahvater bay to the Colum
bia river and Eastern Washington.

From every section comes the
report that there is still a vast
amount of snow in the mountains,
which, if it docs not go off at once,
will afford water enough in the
Willamette to continue boating
on the river- throught the entire
summer.
Late leports from the Eastern
Oregon counties state that the loss
of stock in that section this winter
will be heavy. Sheen have suffered
the greatest, it being stated that
at least 25 per cent, of all having
perished.

from a number of the citizens of
Albany, somo of them prominent
citizens. The purport of each
letter was to urge the present
members and officers of ur Board
of Trade to activity, to wake them
pp, as it were, from their hibernat
ing sleep which they were leeming
to enjoy. If it were impossible to
do this, and it seemed as though
such was the foregone conclusion,
it was suggested that the active
citizens ot Albany, those who
have the reputation of being
active, should j in together and
form another Board of Trade which
"would soon put the present organi
sation far in the bhade. should
indications of the existence of
the present Board ever be un
earthed, these indications will

was held, being the third one, and

to report, which reported that over
$2000 had been subscribed without
any soliciting and they anticipated

to build the mill. E. C. Pent land,
of Independence, who has landed

upon and ma(le a stirring appeal
for the completion of the subscrip
t ion to the bonus. He also stated
that Messrs. La.nc and Bone were
on their way to the McKenzie to

pressed his approval of the public
spirit manifested, and said that at
Brownsville they lost the woolen
mills through a bonus being raised
at Albany, and regained it through
the public spirit of the citizens at
Brownsville. Mr. T. J. Black
moved that the soliciting com
mittee be given until the 22d day
of March to report and that
another public meeting be held at
that time to hear the report. The
meeting then adjourned.

died at 1 :45 yesterday afternoon of
la grippe, aged 77 years.
New Coastiaa; Schooner.
A gentleman representing mill
ing parties at Alsea Bay, is nego
tiating for the outfit of a new steam
coasting schooner at that place.
The vessel is now under course of
construction, and will be built
something after the came model of
the little schooner Augusta, and
will cost about $8000. The neces
sary boilers and machinery are
being made in Portland. When
completed, she will engage in the
coasting trade, touching at Alsea,
Yaquina, Tillamook, Portland and
other points.

road bed for a distance of fifteen
miles in Cow Cr?ek canyon will be

The loss of traffic on the line
amounts to $100,000. The local

tions the line will remain closed
