SOUIHERN OREGON BLOCKADE.
A Tr.nifer C.ciectios M de Between
AHii.d and Boaeburg.
Mr.O. W. Aycr?, thi1! well known
acchitect of Ashland, -who has
made arrargementH to locate in
this city, arrived yesterday morn
ing from his home in that place.
The trip from Ashland wan made
in two days, and the transfer
through the Cow ('reek canyon
was a rough experience.
When lie left Ashland there was
12 inches of snow and in the Cow
Creek canyon there was live feet of
snow, which has been packed down
and frozen into almost solid ice.
The great lake caused by the big
slide has been drained off some
what, but it is yet three miles long
and seems to have come to stay.
The Southern Pacific company
now proj)ose to use the xlide lor a
bridge, as it naturally forms one.
This would leave a line lake and
eventually make a magnificent
waterfall nearly 100 feet high,
adding to the already wild scenery
ot that region.
The railroad is buried alout 75
feet beneath this lake, and Mr.
Avers suggested that future gener
ations might, in searching for
geological formations, unearth the
old road-bed and set it down as
evidences of a pre-historic age.
About 12 or 13 milss of new road
will have to be built to connect
the broken road.
A dispatch from Ashland states
that the eople have set the time
of completion of repairs at the big
slide at Cow creek canyon, at
about a month hence. , In the
meantime, commencing yesterday,
passengers can travel through
from Ashland to Koseburg by ir
regular trains by making a wagon
transfer between Glendale and
Kiddie's. They are allowed to
carry not exceeding 50 pounds of
baggage each. No mails have as
yet, since the blockade, taken this
route for the north.
North of Roseburg regular pas
senger trains run on schedule
time. South of Ashland trains
run each way about every alter
nate day as far as Sisson, beyond
which to San Francisco a daily
train has been kept going.
The only impediment now in
the way is that of the slide at tun
nel 9, where a transfer has to be
made. It is expected that by
: Monday this will be removed.
The Albany & Astoria Hallway.
Dr. A. Kinney, of Astoria, is in
the city. It is rumored that his
visit is for the purpose of confer
ring with tho .Albany & Astoria
Railway Company, and tnat in
connection with other land owners
of Astoria he offers the company
about $80,000 to locate the ter
minus of the road at a certain
point. One of the directors of the
road states that the company has
received offers of plenty of capital
to build the entire road, and that
it will be built as fist as a work of
that magnitude can le accom
plished. A Boat Capsized.
O. F. Taylor and Albert Thomp

miles below Harrisburg Wednes
day, met with quite an accident.
They had been up to Harrisburg

MANY SHAGS IN TEE CHANNEL.
The Bad Effects of the Flood-The Mat

''There oubt to be some one io

don't know whetner tiiere

or not," says the gentleman,
'"hut the matte t tdiollhl he looked
after, for steamers coming or going
on the Willamette sire in eon.-iant
danger of having the bottom of
their hulls torn to pieces. The
late flood has filled the river in
many places with Miugs and thill,
which have become emb -dded in
the channel, and the wafer goitm
dawn has left theni just a few
inches helovv the surface. There
being nothing to warn the pilot or
captain of their whereabouts, it is
not unlikely that the sinking of
some steamer will be reported, and
then some one will have to pay."
The worst trouble lo on the .ower
riyer. It is said that from a short
distance twlow ilbina to the luad
of Swan Island snags ar so thick
that it requires the greatest caut'on
to avoid a disaster. Snags are also
said to be very plentiful, as well as
dangerous, in the chanrcl near St.
Johns. Few are then seen until
the mouth of the Willamette is
nearcd.
It the matter is as bad as repre
sented the channel should be
looked after as soon as practicable.
.Mr. Henrietta ftrown'a Work.
The Oregonian has this to say of
a well known Albany woman :
Airs. A. R. Kigps Airs. Henrietta
Ih-own and Mrs. II. M. Robb,
whose names have been piomi
nently identified with the temper
ance movement foi several years
pa t. yesterday took a new step by
incorporating " the Women's
Christian Temperance Union. The
object of the corporation is to
educate public sentiment in this
statu up to the standard of total
abstinence, to overthrow ttie drink
traffic, to enliit the women of his
city in systematic temperance work
and to rescue unfortunate women
and girls. The value of the prop
erty now in possession of the cor
poration is $1000, but they hope to
acquire more. The objects of
these devoted women are some
what numerous, and, in the lan
guage of an immortal philosopher,
"they have a large job on their
hands."
Another Colony fur Oregon.
"There is a colony ot forty Ger
man faiuilies in Southern Dakota
who are making preparations to
pack up their possessions to find
homes in Oregon," said the secre
tary of the Portland immigration
board to an Orcgonian reporter.
They have sent four representa
tives to look up a location, as they
all desire to locate in the same
place. These men who are acting
as advance guards are very favora
bly impressed with the country,
and the probability is that they
will decide upon some place in the
Willamette Valley. The location
will be selected soon, as the eclony
in anxious to get here in time to
put in this season's crops. They
have had nothing but poor har
vests during the past four years,
and they are getting tired of their
present lots. If there is a place
Providence smiles on with more
kindness they are determindd to
find it, and there is no question
but they will rind in Oregon the
promised land. j
