THE SIL VER QUESFIOS.
l'erhaps there is no subject be
fore our people, that outweighs in
ii terest that of the coinage of sil
ver. The arguments on both sides
are carried on with spirit, and
whether free coinage or paper issue
on silver bullion is to be the rule of
action is the real question, for the
demonitization of silver will not be
longer tolerated.
Senator Stewart, of Nevada, is
one ot the able exponents of the
unlimited coinage of silver and he
lias written to the New York Tri
bune his views noon the subject.
As he is the recognized leader of
the unlimited silver-coinage con
tingent, his arguments may be
taken as the best that can bo ad
vanced on this topic. They are
interesting just at this time when
the whole subje:t of our silver coin
age if a living issue which congress
proposes to take hold of very soon.
Senator Stewart says 1,200,000,000
people in the world use silver for
money ; not over 'J00.000.000 use
old. The total money of the
world is given at $11,488,500,000,1
of which $3,831,500,000 is
13,711,000,000 gold and $3,94ti,000,
000 paper. He says if gold is the
-only money metal, silver and
paper should be abolished. liut it
would be impossible to get the
$$,000,000,000 in gold to take their
places, or if the silver be turned
into paper there would be $$,000,
000,000 of credit money based on
less than $1,000,000,0 .0 of gold -which
would be inflation with a
vengeance. He holds that in the
last fifteen years the stock of cold
coin has not increased, the present
production being entirely atsoibed
in the arts and in loss by wear and
otherwise, so that silver must be
relied upon in the future . for in
crease in coinage. But to demone
tize silver would reduce one-half
the gold supply, as that projwrticn
of the gold product is now taken
out of silver-bearing ores, which
would not be profitable to work for
either metal alone. He calls
limited silver coinage practical
demonetization. He holds more
paper money is needed, as is shown
by the issue of $4,000,000,000 of
paper money and that there could
be no possible danger until that
amount (4 coin was added to the
circulation. The addition must
come from silver as there is no gain
in gold, as above stated, and it
would be impossible to ever coin
$4,000,000,000 in silver in adoition
to the ordinary increased demands
of trade. He says Europe needs
all the silver it can get outside of
this country and takes $12,000,000
from us besides, and that in no
vent would this country get any
but the product of our own mines.
The present paper money of the
United States in excess of metallic
reserves is $426,000,000. To check
the rapid decline of prices every
where heestimates that $300,000,000
in addition is necessary. To place
this money on a metallic basis,
$726,000,000 of gold or silver would
be required. He does not believe
that the Nation could ever accumu
late that much in addition to an
nually increasing needs, and until
that point is reached he argues
there '.vill be no danger of inflation.
He concludes, therefore, that free
coinage is necessary to restore
values which have declined since
its demonetization in 1873, and
that s far from there ever being a
glut of silver, the only trouble
would be that "there would not be
eilvr enough available for the
purpose.
press a feeling thai she thus serves
the cause of humanity on the terms
of deliberate suicide. In the cafce
of the priest so acting (as in the
instance ot Father Damien), the
sacraments and ofhees of the
church must be administered by
him alone, and upon him they are
obligatory even at the penalty of
life. But in the case of the nurse,
and in all that a Sister may do,
the parallel fails; as does, obvious
ly, the description in the press of
Sister Kose Gertrude as "Father
Damien's successor." Sister Hose
Gertrude can accomplish for the
lepers no more than they can ac
complish for themselves if aided
by the support of funds from Christ
ian sympathizers in other parts of
the world. The leper colonv at
Molokai is hot stricken in prostrate
helplessness like men maimed and
wounded to the death on a battle
field. The sufferers pursue de
spite the fatal sign upon them
the ordinary occupations, and'even
amusements, of life. So tli.t for a
time, more or less lengthened,they
are fully able to minister to eat h
other's wants nursing included.
One asks, therefore, in the names
both of religion and common sense,
why a healthy young lady should
b encouraged to court death on to
false and emotional an issue.
