The best information available continues to reiterate the fact that business utM the financial transac tions of the Vtonntry aic improving, The basis of 'cent opinions upoi this subject isVe SrowinS strerj, and position of tbfl Pi'ii but not as yet any marked change in the rate of interest. The increase of surplus reserve of New York banks, is nlaced at $4,239,700, bringinz the actual reserve above six mil lions, and the Boston Advertiser says the clearing house rate of in terest in tiiat city to borrowing banks has been as low as 1 per cent. That however is exceptional, lor it is further stated that in the - v?eneral market money is still mpney, and the rate of interest is welf sustained by tae banks. In New l'ork the bank? and trust companies are reported to be doing nothing on call at less than G per cent., while in Boston the general rate is still kept up by the banks to 5 and 6 per cent. Of course bor rowers on call now find sources of supply in Boston that are open to . them at lower rates, and bankers balances in New York, always variable, have ranged downward to 2 per cent, on call loans. In time transactions, however, a large proportion of the business is still at 5a to (' per cent, the more choice grades of paper passing at to 5 per cent. The course of the mar ket tor foreign exchange during the past week it is said has been Steadily upward, short sterling tills having advanced 2 per cent., with a .jood demand and no over-supply of bills. This, of course, again defers the hopes that had been cherished of an early importation ' of gold. As long as the holdings ot gold of the Bank of England continue .o low they are now only about $13,000,000 with a chance that withdrawals may be made for shipment to the continent as well as to South America, there i3 not much reason to expect a movement of gold to this country, if there is any practicable means of checking the overflow from the Bank of England. The magnitude of the banking business in Great Britain is well shown in a recent review of the .London Economist, which states that the deposits in the English and British joint-stock banks during the year ending last June increased from .339,000,000 to 386,000,000, while in the whole United Kingdom it increased from 478.400,000 to 510,400,000. In cluding the Bank of England, the joint-stock and the private banks, the increase above was something like 30,000,000. As there was an average advance of 15 per cent, in the market price of bank shares, it j is evident that the increased busi ness brought in a handsome profit. The railroad earnings for the month of December and for the past year are both highly satisfactory, one peculiar feature being that because of the better rates received and the greater economies practiced the roads have been able to make heavier gains relatively in the net than in the gross earnings. The detailed table of the Financial Chronicle give the gross earnings for December of 143 roads, which show a net gain of $3,140,104. or 9.81 per cent., the gross earnings being $35,133,434. For the year the gross earnings of 130 roads - were $455,554,351, an increase of $35,754,781, or 8.52 per cent. It is to be said, however, that in this yearly statement, 53 roads, among them many that aro prominent are not included, as they have re- uorteJ but 11 monins, wane mere , -, .1 are 20 others that have reported : making a roup;!) estimate o . turnings for the year, finda 20!) roads have earnedSOod in 18S9 against 1781,810,0 in or an increase of $50,190,1. These roads', however, opera 130,2."-. miles, against 127,111' 1083. In gcnoial trade no spe; ajtivity is' yet noticeable, bu-; m vlerate business is in progress all demrt meats. 0.15 5 00 1 . , liu: stories of hunger and priva tion during the snow blockades oi the various railroads, will form interesting reading for some time after the snoff disappears.
