SPECIAL, 13:30 A. M.
Not to see our stoves and ranges
before buying is a mistake. Mis
takes are nlwayj costly. In heat
ing stoves We have the largest as
well as the most carefully selected
stock in the city. The. stoves we
ofier were not bought as an experi
ment but as a certainty. We
know what each stove will do, and
they were bought for cash, so the
price is right. We have special
ties in heaters, beside our regular
lines of Garland, Argand and Su
perior stoves and ranges.

3iodmaaii, the Shakespearean Tragediir,
Will Play Hamlet Saturday Evening
Daniel E. Bandmann, the great
Shakespearean tragedian, who
with his excellent company de
lighted the audience at the opera
house in this city Wednesday
evening in the Merchant of Venice,
will return and play Hamlet on
Saturday night.
Bandmann lias acquired a nation
al reputation as a finished Shakes
pearean tragedian. In Salem he
was interviewed by a Journal le
portei . The actor, who possesses
a rich and refined German accent,
was arrayed in a slouch hat and
ranching costume, wiln loose flan
nel shirt open at the throat, and
told with pride of his 1100 acre
ranch at Missoula, Montana, where
he is engaged in rearing Percheron
horses. His converge in the mother
tongue is still more charming than
his English, and his versality as
an actor is largely due to his per
fect training in "these two most
powerful and graphic of modern
languages.
Daniel E. Baudmann is a native
of Prussia. Coming to New York
as a boy of 10 he at once entered
upon the German stage. His
career of distinction was so rapid
that in three years he returned to
Germany and played leading parts
in Berlin, Sprague, Pesth and
Vienna theatres. Here he laid the
foundation of his Shakespearean
studies. He returned to the Ameri
can stage and in a few series of
farewell concerts attracted the at
tention of the dramatic critics of
New Yorkwho urged him to enter
on a career of the English stage.
In six weeks he appeared in Neblo's
Garden as Shvlock, supported by
McCulIock, 'Frank Mayo and the
most eminent actors of tne city.
He has played on the English and
German stage ever since. His
phenominal career attracted the
attention of Edwin Forest, who in
vited him to play at his home
theatre in Philadelphia, and on his
first appearance threw him a bou
quet plucked with his own hand,
entertained him him and traveled
with him for years. Forest regard
ed Bandmann's Hamlet as the
most wonderful interpretation of
his day, and competent critics con
tinue to so regard it. The pres
ence of only about (250 people at
this play last night must be ex
plained in part by the hold la
grippe has on so many of the first
citizens. For the rendition of this
masterpiece of Shakespeare the
citizens of San Francisco presented
Bandmann a gold medal set with
diamonds.
After a career of thirty-two years
as actor, this illustrious man has
lost none of his versatility, vigo.,
or boundless enthusiasm for the
great English master of human
passions. He has played in Lon
don, Australia, India, and with a
party of twelve people went to the
principal cities of China. Burmah,
and the Malay peninsula. His
passion for travel and the stage is
unabated. Tho' time has tinged
his flowing hair it has not dimmed
the luster of his flashing eye. This
man who has been the guest of the
Duke of Edinburg : tte guest of
the late Emperor Fritz for a week
at the Kaiserhof; who was the
personal friend and companion of
Horace Greeley, Bayard Taylor,
Emerson, and for whom Longfel
low wrote his drama, "The New
England Witches," surely, should
receive a cordial welcome in this
city to-morrow evening.

SEW3 ABOUT THE TRAINS.
A Fresh Snow Fall of Fourtcea Inches at
Ashlacd-The Weather Moderation.
Special to the Herald.
Ashland, Or., Jan. A fresh
fall of snow at ami north of this
place prevented the regular local
train, which has been running
since the overland trains were
blockaded, from leaving. During
the past 24 hours 14 inches of snow
has fallen. Superintendent Brandt
arrived to-day from Portland. He
came with a snow plow, which
opened the track north of Ashland.
A train will leave here in the
morning for Portland. It is wann
er here to-day, and it is hoped the
worst is over.
The situation at Sims and north
ward remains much the same.
The snow fall has abated some
what, and it is now hoped to have
the track open by the end of t he
week. Much anxiety is felt for
fear that should the weather turn
warm washouts are likely to occur,
which will delay all trains as com
pletely as the snow blockade has
done. The track has been sub
merged so long beneath its cover
ing ot alternate melting snow and
ice that it is not in a gocd condi
tion, and it will require days to put
it in order again.
The damage and loss to the
Southern Pacific Company by
blockade has been immense. The
company has used every effort and
has taken prompt measures to clear
the track and to render the be
lated passengers comfortable, nd
those who have been caught in the
tieup are not disposed to complain.

The Astoria Itailroad.
The Willamette Valley Tribune,
of Independence, thus "bunches"
the proposed railroads to the sea :
"The proposed Astoria, Tillamook,
McMinnville, Sheridan, Dallas, In
dependence, Albany, Salem rail
road is gaining on paper very rap
idly, and we hope to soon see it
merge itself into more formidable
and actual existence. No road is
more needed than the proposed
one, none according to length will
pay better. The natural obstacles
to build are small as compared to
many other roads already built
and being built through our state,
and the advantages to be gained
are badly needed. The farmers
need this road, the town and cities
also. The farmers to get their
products direct to the sea without
paying towage, drayage, middle
men, etc., for which they are con
stantly taxed, and a consequent
and corresponding reduction of
their produce ; and the merchants
for the same reason, and that they
may be enabled to sell goods
cheaper to tne people and pay more
to the producers. The men of this
valley, irrespective of locality,
place or occupation, should look at
and treat this railroad movement
with gravity and earnestness. It
is what will give you reduced rates
on export and importation ; it will
shorten the time of transportation
from days to hours ; it will increase
the value of real estate largely ; it
affords a higher price lor all you
raise by being quicker and more
direct and dispensing with tbe
middle w ork and unavoidable and
consequent expense of the old
routes. We hope to see tbe action ;
immediate action in the matter."

Monday evening at the opera bouse,
and tbe further fact must be re
membered that popular prices only
are demanded:" 'Lynwood' was the
title of the play presented last even
ing in tbe Imperial epera house by
the Russell-Jewell Dramatic com
pany. The scene of tbe drama is
Kentucky at the time of the war
between the Nerth and Ssutb.
The plot is well laid and tbe lead
ing character, taken by Miss. Ling
bam, the star of the company, was
clearly portrayed. She acts with
grace and without the least affecta
tion. In tbe tender past ages she is
sweet and sympathetic, while in
the heavier parts she is intensely
emoticnal. Her youth, personal
appearance and talents predict lor
her a brilliant future. Miss Yant.o
was a decided' favorite with the
audience. Her pranks and song?
were laughed at and mucb erjojtd.
Miss Jennie Darrah had little to do
but did it well. Mr. Morris was a
decided success in his part. Few
could have interpreted it as well as
be. Mr. H. S. Stedley acted a
great deal of earnestness, though
he was scarcely heavy enough for
the part allotted to him. The rest
of the support was good. The
company are certainly deserving of
goad patronage during their
engagement iu Vancouver. Last
evening the audience was a large
one.
